I try to finish a writing session with a new page started in the next chapter--that's much easier to face the next time than a blank page.

I think it's what writers commonly say: Stick with it! The girl in "Sea Dogs" is based on my daughter, Beth, who was about 10 when I started thinking about the book. She's 39 now, so it took me a while, with long non-productive gaps in between writing spurts. I would recommend they start younger than I did, however, and try to be consistent with it.

I would have to say the joy of creating brings me the most pleasure, especially when an idea or phrase or paragraph turns out just right. It takes a lot of work, though, and most of us are never truly satisfied. It is fun to put sentences and a story together, though.

I am ready to start the sequel to "Sea Dogs" as yet unnamed. I also have a book set in the 1800's in Massachusetts, that I'd like to revisit.

I get inspired by reading my favorite authors (Jane Austen, Sue Grafton, P.D. James, to name 3) and go from there.

I think I was caught by the phrase 'sea dogs' referring to sailors, so the story evolved from there, and I used the personalities of pets I have known to create many of the characters.
