Ask the Author: Marcus Alexander Hart

Marcus Alexander Hart Be realistic about your expectations. You might just be a breakout success and sell a billion books and have theme parks built based on your stories and then buy yourself a castle in Scotland. You might. Hold onto that dream. It does happen.

But it probably won't. As a new novelist, you will probably struggle to pay your rent AND buy groceries. You'll likely struggle to get people to even notice you exist, let alone read your stories. And you have to be okay with that.

You have to write because you like writing, not because you want (or worse, need) to get validation or money from it. Believing that novel writing is the easy road to fame and fortune is a one-way ticket to crazy town.

I am writing this from crazy town, where I live full time. Please buy my books.
Marcus Alexander Hart When I write, I create worlds that are exactly the way I want them to be. Not in the sense that they're utopias (often far from it), but in the sense that everything happens for a reason. Even the bad things. It all means something and it's all going to make sense in the end. Which is more than anyone can say for the real world.
Marcus Alexander Hart Poorly. I turn into Don Music from Sesame Street. You know, that Muppet who couldn't write lyrics, and would bang his face on the piano keys screaming, "I'll never get it! Never!"

Eventually I give up. I say, "Screw this! I'll never be a real writer! I quit!" Then I leave my keyboard, making a promise to myself and the universe to never return. Then two days later I get six ideas for new books.

So I guess the answer is "extreme histrionics."
