Sylvia Shults I wrote Hunting Demons at the request of a ghost-hunting colleague, who came to me and said that she had had an encounter with the demonic, and would I write a book about it for her. I honestly didn't want to, at first. I was very wary of attracting the wrong sort of supernatural attention. But Linda's story was so compelling, and she was so sincere in her belief in what she had experienced, that I felt I owed it to her to tell her story to the best of my abilities.
Sylvia Shults Fortunately, I don't get writer's block very often. But when I get panicky about finishing a book, or working on it (which is, I think, a good definition of writer's block), I go small. I focus on one part of the book. Then I narrow down to one scene in that one part. Looking at the details helps me start putting one foot in front of the other. Before I know it, I'm off and working again.
Sylvia Shults I'm currently working on a nonfiction book called 44 Years in Darkness: The Rhoda Derry Story. It's about one of the patients at the Peoria State Hospital. Rhoda's story is so compelling, I felt it had to be told in detail. I'm really intrigued by this young woman ... I won't say I'm enjoying writing the book, because that's not exactly the right word. Let's say rather that I'm learning a lot while writing the book.
