Funny you should ask. I took a non-fiction writing class about 15 years ago in order to create content on our construction website. The teacher told me to get a couple of my pieces published, but at the time, I thought she was just being an encouraging teacher.
About 7 years ago, I contracted Lyme Disease. It was a rather difficult time, and I listened to a lot of music. The songs put the thread of a story in my head. When I was strong enough, I began writing it down. The following year I returned to teaching Environmental Science, but I had been bitten by the writing bug. I wrote during summers until last June, when I left teaching to do this full time. As much as I miss being around the young energy of high school, I love this adventure.

I get to design my world as I see fit. I'm creative when I want to be. I'm productive when I want to be. I'm silly when I want to be. Professionally, I get to be lost in a story. Everyone has a story in them. As a writer, I get to make a concept into something tangible.

(view spoiler)[I was at the CT Renaissance Faire, talking to the blacksmith about his craft. He was explaining the bellows he was using didn't actually belong in the time period of the fair. My first reaction was, "Who cares? Being a blacksmith is cool, regardless." But his passion for being precise in his profession made me look around with new eyes. Instead of a type of pre-Halloween party, I now saw the passion in the LARPers (Live Action Role Players). Here, at the fair, they ruled their world. Outside of the fair, they would look like oddballs. That set me to thinking, "What if someone unwittingly entered their world." Hmmmm. (hide spoiler)]
