My father is a complete mystery to me, outside of two or three photographs. He was mentally ill and dangerous, but my mother said he was also brilliant and charming. I have not seen or heard from him since I was three or four, and I would like to know more about his life. I think a good book could be written about him, but of course it would all be speculation.

Writing is powerful! We get to experience lives outside of our own, lives that we choose. It's like being in a store and trying on costumes - and then going through the mirror to live as that character for a while. Always wondered what it would be like to be an assassin? Try it on, and still be home for dinner! And if you're really lucky, there is the reader, following you through the looking glass, whooping and hollering about what a cool place you've created. NOTHING better!

Inspiration is everywhere. It's like tuning your radio to a writer's frequency, where every offhand remark, news story, or human interaction can lead to a 'what if' moment. Most of it won't go into a story, but thinking that way trains your writer muscles to dream of an alternate reality that would interest a reader - and interest you enough to keep going.

This is a tough question, because I know you're expecting an enlightened answer, and I'm not there yet! Sometimes I go in the kitchen and open the fridge and stare into it (I do this a LOT!), or I give up entirely and go grocery shopping. What finally helped me get back to work was joining a critique group, where 5,000 polished words were expected every month and excuses were frowned upon. It's amazing how much having a deadline helps with focus.
