My reading list this summer to date has been a mix of memoir, essays, and novels: The Patch by John McPhee, Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan, A Mind Spread Out on the Ground by Alicia Elliot, Following the River by Lorri Neilsen Glenn, Inheritance by Dani Shapiro and the list continues as I filled in some reading space with other favorites on 'Writing'.

It's Valentine week coming up and when asked by Goodreads to write about my favorite fictional couple I think of Nathan & Sophie in William Styron's - "Sophie's choice." Love so good and then not so good but still love that grew out of trauma and illness from which there were no easy remedies . Tragic past , unsolvable present , yet there is the bond of love, at least as a reader I want to believe that - Styron leaves you wondering - is it true love or a relationship constructed on need? Obviously there's a lot more to consider - so I'll read it again and let you in on further thoughts. This story is so well crafted and only a brilliant narrator like Stingo can describe this intense relationship. Or maybe it's just good writing that makes this couple'a story a favorite.

Writing is hard work, but when you take all the ingredients in your mind that have a potential for a story and they blend together on the page as something uniquely interesting to read..that's the best thing for me about being a writer.
