Phillips It's Valentine week coming up and when asked by Goodreads to write about my favorite fictional couple I think of Nathan & Sophie in William Styron's -…moreIt's Valentine week coming up and when asked by Goodreads to write about my favorite fictional couple I think of Nathan & Sophie in William Styron's - "Sophie's choice." Love so good and then not so good but still love that grew out of trauma and illness from which there were no easy remedies . Tragic past , unsolvable present , yet there is the bond of love, at least as a reader I want to believe that - Styron leaves you wondering - is it true love or a relationship constructed on need? Obviously there's a lot more to consider - so I'll read it again and let you in on further thoughts. This story is so well crafted and only a brilliant narrator like Stingo can describe this intense relationship. Or maybe it's just good writing that makes this couple'a story a favorite. (less)

We live in a society in which, thanks to advances in reproductive technology, there are multiple ways to create a baby. A few years ago a young woman from BC lost a court case for children born from gamete donations of sperm, egg, and embryos to have the same rights as adopted children to learn information about their birth parents.
