Excercise. That is the single best thing I have ever found. Writing is a sedate occupation and your system can slow down and 'fill with cobwebs.'
A short burst of excercise gets the blood pumping through the brain, bringing oxygen and fresh energy. Next time you are stuck on a crossword clue stop and do five minutes excercise then go back to it. You'll be amazed how often you can answer that clue straight off.

Don't procrastinate. Some of the stories in my book were written 20 years ago. Two were started twenty years ago and finished this year ! What was the delay ? Work. Paying the bills. Too many other ambitions & distractions. But that feeling in the back of your head that says "I'll do it tomorrow." Well tomorrow never comes. Get off your but and do it. Now. Today. And don't wait for 'the muse' to strike. Go out and find it. Also, in the 'old days' there was always that nagging feeling of, "What's the point. It'll just get refused by all the publishers." Well not any more. Writers have been liberated with modern Self Publishing. No more excuses.

I've just finished my first collection of short stories. I am already two stories into the next collection.
I also have a screenplay that is with various agents and TV companies.
I also have a very original series of childrens stories that need an illustrator to get them moving.

Inspiration comes from everywhere. Music is a big one. Especially a moving classical piece. Films; TV, Newspapers. Other books. And sometimes ideas just come out of the ether when I am not expecting them.

The Man Who Couldn't Stay Dead has been carried around in my head for twenty years. But I always 'saw' it as a film screenplay. When I put together my collection of short stories I thought I would just write a test version of the story about 1-2000 words long to see how it came out. But once I started, it just kept on going and ended up at 13000 words. I like it a lot - but but still intend to write it as a screenplay.
