I don't really keep reading lists other than here on Goodreads. I don't read by season either. I tend to read what's handy. Lately that means whatever someone gives me or what I find at the Little Free Library down the street or what I grab in a hurry at the public library. I like the serendipity of it.

How is there so much crap under the couch? Seriously. We move our couch and change our living room configuration like, monthly. Still, every time, it's crazy gross under there. HOW? How are we such gross people?

There are tons of things that make me want to write. The biggest thing is being in a new place. I can be on the side of the road in Kansas or on a hiking trail I've never been on. But generally, driving in new environs gives me ideas. I'm also inspired by the stories people I encounter tell me. I'm a keeper of stories. It's as though people around me can tell their stories will be held carefully by me and so they tell me deep and serious things. Some of those things must be made into a written story.
Other things that inspire me are: music lyrics, skiing, running, swimming, and art museums.

I'm working on personal essays right now. The most recent is about an aunt who was very important to me and her daughter's own research on palliative care.
In a few months when my son starts Kindergarten, I may be getting back to working on the second draft of the second book about Seffra. It is untitled at the moment.

I tell my writing students to read a lot and write a lot. Learn about your writing process. Then when you feel that process becoming too routine, shake it up and discover your writing process all over again. But really, I'm on the list of aspiring writers too, so please, by all means, what should I do?

I thought of the entry point of the book based on a real woman I'd known whose husband had shot her and she'd lost her sense of smell. The rest of the book was inspired by the kids I'd met over the years in residential treatment facilities. And, of course, I drew on my own life experiences for material.

My new favorite thing about being an indie author is boxing up books to mail out in what I find in our fire-starting pile: cardboard, paper grocery bags, paperboard.... and packing tape.
The best thing about being a writer is all the time I get to spend letting my mind wander. I love to think, and, to write, I have to think very, very hard and in great detail. Also, working in my pajamas. That's a perk for sure.
