Michael Abraham My new book, "Orange, VA" is a novel of political intrigue. I ran for a state legislature office a year ago, and the experience tuned me into how poorly we in Virginia and America are governed. This book explores the idea that the proverbial foxes are placed in a position to guard the hen-house. I began to think about which of history's lessons have shown us similar situations and how power was wrested back. It was great fun to write!
Yes, it espouses a particular political philosophy (mine!). Warning: It is not fair and balanced.
Michael Abraham Every conversation. Everybody has a story.
Michael Abraham I am excited to be working with a friend who is an amazing portrait artist on my first collaboration, a book called, "Keepers of the Tradition," a compilation of portraits and stories of contemporary Appalachians doing what grandma and grandpa used to do. She has an amazing ability to draw onto canvas her subjects' inner soul. See her work here:

I'm doing the interviews and stories. We'll release this book in April and I'm thrilled about it!
Michael Abraham I think this is the same answer almost every writer gives: write! Somehow find the time every day to write. 15 minutes. An hour. Whatever time allows. Learn to appreciate where your thoughts take you, only done (or best done) when those thoughts are eligible for reflection through written words.
Michael Abraham Clarity. A friend says, "I need to see what I write to know what I think." Writing requires the discipline of intense thought and clarity.
I also enjoy the process of bringing a fictional character to life, giving her personality, strengths, weaknesses, failings, and doubts.
Michael Abraham Long walks. I have a rail-trail near my house and I walk it often. My typical walk is 3-6 miles. This time of year, it's dark when I walk. Without the stimulus of things to see or other people around, it is meditative and introspective; I do most of my "writing" there. Then it's simple keyboarding the next day.
