J. Rutger Madison Actually there are two. The main heroine, Marisol, is a young priestess (age 22). She grew up in a rather privileged family with a comfortable upbringing. Nonetheless, she endured tragedy; she had lost both of her parents before the events in the novel. The church comforted her through those losses, and she entered the priesthood to give something back.

Over the course of the novel, she finds that the people and institutions she once revered are not what they seem.

The second, Leoda, is older, married, and a mother of a precocious daughter. Like Marisol, she is priestess, albeit of a religion hostile to hers. She grew up in a poor family, and often had to forage to feed them. Her ability to live off the land strengthened her ties with her patron goddess, The Earth Mother.

While neither is a typical sword-wielding warrior, I consider both to be strong women. Both rely on their wit, but are capable of firing a pistol when necessary to protect themselves or their loved ones.
J. Rutger Madison All Souls Betrayed, the sequel to A Curse upon the Saints.
J. Rutger Madison At the risk of sounding cliche, write often. However, I would also recommend educating yourself on the business side of things. Understand the basics of copyright law, contract law, the publishing industry, etc.

J. Rutger Madison I write. I sit at the keyboard and put words to paper. Sometimes it turns out to be crap, and I end up throwing it out. Eventually the words will come if I work at it long enough.
