Almost all of my stories are inspired by family in one way or another. In fact, if you took both of my published books and my five unpublished stories, I could literally draw out a family tree of all the characters and how they are related to each other in real life. For example the main character in Little Brooke is the daughter and neice of the main characters in The Popcorn Predicament. Stories that I tend to tell my own children for entertainment usually inspires me to start writing.

I am working on several things at once. I have two completed stories that I am trying to get published. The first is called Sweet Julian which is based on a little boy who craves anything made with lots of sugar. His mother is concerned and tries to control the situation, but his father encourages his obsession with sweets. This story was inspired by my 4-year-old nephew and the real conflict that his mother who is a nurse has with his father who has his own love for sugar. The second story is called The Knot, which is about a young girl named Diane who wakes up one morning to find that her thin hair is now beautifully thick. It's actually not thick but the giant knot that has formed gives it that appearance. Diane then deals with the consequences of not listening to her mother when she was told to brush the knot out. This story was inspired by my mother who is the real Diane and still complains of her thin hair.
I also have several stories that are written but are in that stage of just sitting on my iPhone for several months until I can come back to them with fresh eyes to edit.

(view spoiler)[My most recent book, The Popcorn Predicament, is based off of a true event from my own childhood. My brother and I attempted to make popcorn on the stovetop but could not figure out why the scalding hot kernels continued to shoot out at us. I told this story many times to my children and always thought it would make a cute children's book. My books all tend to rhyme but this story appeared to be a difficult one to put into a rhyme. Then one night, the first couple lines just came to me and I frantically typed it into my iPhone. After several days, I finally had my first draft. (hide spoiler)]

I feel like I am still an aspiring writer myself, but from my limited success thus far, my advice would be to keep writing, keep editing, and keep submitting. I received many rejection letters before I received that first acceptance letter. In fact, I use my experience as a teaching tool for my young children. I make sure they know when I get rejected and they see that I may be disappointed but that I keep trying. One thing is for sure, I will never have another published book if I don't try.

The best thing about being a writer is that moment when I hear a child laugh out loud when reading one of my stories. That is, without a doubt, the coolest thing. The idea that my words on paper can elicit such a response is what makes me want to write and publish more children's books. I recently read my books to a Brownie troop and when I heard those genuine belly laughs, I can't even describe the feeling it gave me. But that, right there, was enough to make me want to write more -- just to hear that sound.

Writer's block is not a huge issue for me since my writing is not my livelihood. In fact, I may go months without writing. Eventually a story comes to me and then I type away, usually on my iPhone. I tend to leave it alone for several months and then come back to it. When I feel like writing but don't have an idea, I try to think of funny stories from my own childhood or stories that my family has told me. The Popcorn Predicament is such a story as well as many of my unpublished stories.
