I came across lots of my old copies of Melody Maker and NME's and it made me think a lot about how the nature of music subculture and fame has altered since the dawn of the internet. I thought about all those bands who seemed to be on the verge of greatness in the 90's, who are now more or less forgotten, and how it must feel to have nearly made it, but failed at the last hurdle.
There's also such a mythology about dead rock stars too, that I wanted to explore, and it’s doubly tragic for those who die young- they’ll always be trapped in the amber of their time, never having a chance to change, to grow up. They’ll always be defined through other people’s memories.

Don't wait for inspiration, inspiration comes while you work. Write every day, be honest with yourself and when you're happy with something and/or need advice, give it to someone whose taste you trust to have a look at it. Expect criticism, develop and thick skin. Read as much as you can and keep a notrebook.

I'm just finishing another novel at the moment- imagine the exact opposite of Roald Dahl's Matilda, but for adults. There's a fire in it. And a lot of dogs.
