Laura Baumbach Finding out your work touched or inspired someone.
It's amazing. I've had readers tell me they wanted their gay sons to find partners/husbands like the characters in my stories. That they deserved men like mine.
And I've had other authors tell me they started writing because of my writing. Not that I'm special but because they find someone who inspired their muse. There is nothing like knowing you made a difference, even a small difference, in another's life. It makes you grateful.
Laura Baumbach It's one of the stories in the line up, yes. I'm just waiting for which characters want to talk to me next.
Laura Baumbach Poorly! I'm afraid life is too busy for me to complain about block. The biggest stumbling barrier to my writing it lack of time. Just to write my new release, the first in 3 yrs, I had to stay up until 3am night after night. And it was just 22k.
I need complete quiet when I write. I get into the world I'm creating and anything that interrupts throws me out. It takes a while to get back in to it. Precious time lost. My family is very understanding but my muse isn't.
Laura Baumbach I opened up my manuscript on a new novel last night, trying to get back into the mindset for it. I have a couple chapters written and I need to get into the story again, get the sound of the characters talking in my head again, let the setting build up around me so I can disappear into the action. It's an ex-CIA operative who rejoined civilian life as the owner of a successful world-wide security firm. Professional, tough, hardened, deadly, he has a small group of associates who were CIA, too, but he's a strict loner. Think A PERSON OF INTEREST personality type. Haven't decided on a title yet.
Laura Baumbach Sometimes just a phrase will ignite a story. I once read a news article where an actress was describing how her character, an elegant elf, ended up with a scruffy human ranger. She said "Every girl likes a bit of rough sometimes." And my novel A BIT OF ROUGH just poured out of my head. Just a phrase or a photo will do it.
A call for submission from the SyFy channel magazine that wanted a 'treasure' story sparked DETAILS OF THE HUNT. I thought immediately of pirates and aliens then decided to make the pirate the actual 'treasure' of the story. You just never know where it will come from.
Laura Baumbach Since this story was part of an existing series the basics of the setting being in a wild fire was already established. I wanted the main characters to be taken by surprise by the fire so I picked characters with skill sets that would help them logically survive. I chose a doctor and a fireman. As an ER nurse myself, I knew this pairing of professionals was pretty common.
