“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:31-32 Do you know anyone who does not want to be free? The thought of being free appeals to us, probably because it sounds like we can do whatever we want. Like the disciples, some of us are slow learners. I understand Jesus’ teaching to be the way he lived, loved and gave his life for us. The knowledge that comes from being a disciple, a true follower of Jesus, comes slowly and is more often than not a struggle to maintain. Still, I like the idea of being free, so every day I try again. Each day the truth trickles through like sunlight on an overcast day. In the shadows I can see where I need to let God’s light—the truth—into my own heart before the love of Jesus can shine through me. The truth that sets me free is not doing what I want but what Jesus wants to do in me and through me to build the kingdom of God. Deborah Meister”

“Not Suffering Alone Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done. Luke 22:42 The “Agony in the Garden” has always moved me deeply. Up to this moment, even at the Last Supper, Jesus has appeared to be strong and in control. Now, however, he is weak, vulnerable and very much alone. Jesus is in a state of profound fear over his upcoming passion and death. Along with the fear is a terrible loneliness; Jesus can find no human support. Like any of us, he would hope that at least one of his disciples would notice his pain and come to his side. But they are sound asleep. Perhaps this is why Luke includes the note that “an angel from heaven appeared to him” to strengthen him, as if the angel were saying, “Be assured: countless souls will be willing to suffer their own agony and death for love of you and your teachings.” As our own Lenten journey nears its conclusion this Holy Week, may we find the spiritual strength we need to bear our cross in union with Jesus and support our brothers and sisters in their times of suffering. Fr. Martin Pable, O.F.M. Cap.”

“From Death Into Life We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. Romans 6:4 Our lives have a beginning, but they have no end. Death is simply a momentary transition from our life in this world to the life of resurrection, where for the first time, we can become fully alive. But to grasp the new, we have to let go of the old. And so one day we have to let go of this life so that we can enjoy the fullness of what is to come. That’s what Jesus shows us. This process of letting go is a part of daily life. Jesus asks us to let go of selfishness so we can live in new ways that bring more joy. It’s a daily preparation for the final letting go that opens us up to resurrected life. The best is yet to come. God never disappoints us! Lord,”

“So we pray for an awareness of God’s kingdom, that we might wake up to its presence in and around us. Then the full fruits of God’s kingdom can ripen in us and flow out with a vibrancy that brings new life to others. I’ve seen it happen! Lord, may I take time to be with you every day for some moments of quiet prayer. Without this, my awareness of your kingdom will be cloudy, and I won’t see clearly how to reflect its beauty to others. Help me to be a faithful member of your kingdom. Fr. Kenneth”

“consider what remains with you at the end of the day—a thought you can’t shake, something you read or saw that comforted or even disturbed you. Look and listen there for the kindling in your heart, for the answers to your questions, even the ones you forgot to ask.”

“A comfort and a strength of helpful proportion are waiting to infuse our spirit if we ease ourselves into the divine embrace, if we let go of our tight hold on how we insist life ought to be. Jesus invites us, “I am with you. Come, sit beside me. Lean your head on my shoulder. You don’t have to do or say anything. Let my love slip inside your heart. I will give you rest.” Sr.”

“Lord, help me to make an honest evaluation of my life. I want to start by thanking you for all the joy you give me and for all the good you enable me to do. And then I ask you to forgive me for my infidelities and for failing to love others by thinking too much of my own needs and comfort. Help me to cut negative behaviors out of my life so that it may be totally united with yours. For you, Lord, are my joy. Fr. Kenneth Grabner, C.S.C. Fr. Ken Grabner is a Holy Cross Priest and chaplain at Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. He is the author of several books including Gazing into God’s Open Heart: 101 Pathways to Joy.”
