“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:31-32 Do you know anyone who does not want to be free? The thought of being free appeals to us, probably because it sounds like we can do whatever we want. Like the disciples, some of us are slow learners. I understand Jesus’ teaching to be the way he lived, loved and gave his life for us. The knowledge that comes from being a disciple, a true follower of Jesus, comes slowly and is more often than not a struggle to maintain. Still, I like the idea of being free, so every day I try again. Each day the truth trickles through like sunlight on an overcast day. In the shadows I can see where I need to let God’s light—the truth—into my own heart before the love of Jesus can shine through me. The truth that sets me free is not doing what I want but what Jesus wants to do in me and through me to build the kingdom of God. Deborah Meister”
