“Everyone says you should write about what you know. Fine. But that doesn’t necessarily mean people, places, and events. It doesn’t mean that, because you were a coal miner, that coal mining is the only thing you should write about. What we all know about is our experiences and writing is about experiences. You can write about love because you have loved. You know what love feels like. Same goes for loss, pain, fear, joy, anger, empathy, it doesn’t matter. You know what those things feel like, so you can take your experiences and use them as the basis for your writing. From there, you can manipulate those feelings, you can exaggerate them, you can even introduce conflicting feelings. No matter what my characters are feeling, I first go to my experiences, and then mold my feelings for the specific character.”

“When I read, I discover new worlds, I meet interesting people, and I explore diverse realities. When I write, I discover myself.”

“Even when he makes up the whole damn story, the author always leaves clues about himself.”

“Writing is the only way I've ever known how to express myself. Somewhere, in evrything I have written, you will find the real me.”
