“Peter remained silent, so Nicola took charge. “Let’s start by grabbing whatever we can as it goes by,” she said. “Maybe there’s something useful in there.” Over the next five minutes, they amassed quite a collection. They had pulled out pails, empty pop bottles, a tire, some shoes, and even a small shovel. They looked at their haul, but nothing seemed to hint at a way to get across a ferocious whirlpool.
