“Maybe the very heart and soul of the United States has already perished, and if that is true, then I’m already as good as dead, too. So why go quietly? Why go down without a fight? Maybe… just maybe… I can spark a change. I’ve got a chance to open people’s eyes and raise their awareness. I might still salvage a great destiny for America’s citizens, recapture the unique and valuable essence of what was once the land of opportunity.”

“Members of this body, with the full authority of my government, I hereby declare the withdrawal of the United States of America from this organization. My nation will no longer be a member of the United Nations. Furthermore, please consider this official notice that all non-American citizens have 10 days to leave our country. This very building will be occupied by the New York City Police Department after that time, and anyone remaining will be arrested and deported. My nation has had enough of the parasitic governments represented by this body. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to announce our withdrawal from NATO. All American military units will be recalled immediately. Our naval carrier battle groups and all associated support operations are being ordered home as well. All air wings of the United States Air Force are being recalled from foreign lands. God help all of you – you are on your own.”

“But regulating everyone to a bolt-action, small caliber weapon isn’t what the framers had in mind either. When tyranny arms itself with an M16, it’s tough to resist with a hunting rifle.”

“Our government has slowly morphed into a tyrannical beast, in some regards more intrusive than the British Empire was at the beginning of our Revolutionary War.”

“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.”

“He had tried the justice system, the legal system, politics, and the press. Each attempt had been met with inequity and malaise, sweeping him away to a place of irrelevance and misery. The system no longer functioned, and those who had broken it were about to receive a reward of nearly unlimited power.”

“Sheriff’s Department had long before enrolled in a federal program that provided surplus military equipment to local law enforcement agencies – free of charge. The program, commonly referred to as 1033, had provided the local law enforcement agency with over $4 million dollars in weapons, body armor, trucks and other surplus military equipment.”

“This is what it feels like to have no other choice, to have exhausted all other sensible possibilities. I’ve done everything a reasonable man can, and every single time justice, morality, and liberty were denied.”

“you are so fucking stupid. You two are no higher on the evolutionary scale than pond scum, and I’m surprised your cells can divide. Please…please tell me neither of you ever fathered children. No wonder the damn country collapsed with idiots like you two walking around.”

“The reasons why men join in battle vary. A few do so for country and honor, while a small fraction risk it all because they consider it their job. The vast majority fight because of the brotherhood shared with fellow soldiers. When men see friends and comrades fall to the enemy, a powerful reaction often takes place. Rather than mourn or lose control to disabling emotions, they enter a state of mind where revenge, rage, and sense of purpose override any concerns of survival.”

“Security involves personal liberty, freedom of choice, unrestricted movement, and self-determination. It has always amazed me how easily ‘maintaining control’ morphs into restriction, intimidation, and authority through fear. I hope our friends back there will never forget the experience.”

“The collapse of society was the western front, that conflict augmented by a lack of preparation, limited physical resources, and a severe shortage of human assets. A dark, ominous cloud of uncertainty was the enemy’s primary weapon. Levi was certain that this was going to be a war of attrition. On the eastern front loomed old age. Twenty years ago, Levi would have feared no man. While he’d never spoiled for a fight in any theatre, when one came his way, he had always felt up to the task. Years of military schools and courses had instilled this confidence. Numerous engagements on the battlefield had proven him worthy. That man, however, had been a different Levi York, both physically and mentally. Now, Father Time was employing a strategy that seemed destined to make him fail. He knew the outcome of this battle was inevitable. Ultimately, he had no chance of winning. He was a ball player intentionally fouling his opponent, merely wrangling to prolong the game, desperately trying to stop the clock from counting down to zero. “Aren’t we all fighting for more time?” he reflected as he prepared for his shift on patrol. “Isn’t that what this is all about? I’ve fought insurgents, radicalized religious zealots, power-hungry holy men, and indoctrinated crazies,” he proclaimed to the mirror. “In every single case, we gave better than what we received. I controlled the field at the end of day, each and every time. Is it finally my turn to fall? Will the combination of foes we’re facing finally take me out of the fight?” he ranted. As he pondered his own questions for several moments more, Levi’s spine stiffened, his shoulders squaring off. “Doesn’t matter,” he grunted. “You’re not going down without leaving your best on the field. You’re not going to fade quietly into the night. To the end, you’re going to give it your best, old man.”
