“Alright. I'm over on the dark side. You'd better have the cookies I've been promised.”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“This was another thing Vale’s mother never understood: Vale was aro-ace, both aromantic and asexual. She’d told her parents she just wasn’t interested in dating any number of times… But they never seemed to get it. To them, Vale’s sexuality was a ‘phase’ that they were certain she would one day outgrow. Their obliviousness was a raw spot for Vale.”
Danika Stone, Switchback
“She lifted her head in surprise, following his line of sight above the tree line. Beyond the distant peaks, a green and blue symphony of lights had begun. It rippled and shimmered like sunshine on water, leaving Rich blinking back tears. He'd read something about this but had never seen it before.
“It's the aurora borealis,” Lou said quietly. “Northern lights.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Sometimes,” she whispered, her lips brushing his cheek, “you need to be lost in order to be found.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“You’re an old soul, Ava...” he’d begun, his voice tired.
“God, Dad... Let’s not do this now, please...”
“It’s true. You are. But that means you have to choose your life… not just react to it.”
Danika Stone, Intaglio: The Snake and the Coins
“What's the point?” her father muttered brokenly the day of the funeral. In the last months his shoulders had curled like an autumn leaf.
“The point is that we're not alive unless we also die,” Louise said.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Liv grabbed the cookie nearest her and broke it open.
“It's up to you to make your happy ending.”
Liv stared at it a moment, rereading the words. Did it mean life? Because if it did, then Liv disagreed. Sometimes life was downright unfair. Bad things happened to good people.”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“Sometimes you have to wait out the night,” she said quietly “Morning always comes.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Cosplay. Why you just said the magic word!”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“It was like a mask had been pulled away from his face, uncovering a monster hidden beneath his friendly façade.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Fries and fortune... The perfect combination.”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“Don’t cut too deep in your first prints.”
“But what if we do dig too deep?” a girl in the front asked. “What happens then?”
Giulia reached out to the side, pulling up a print stained with inky shadows, but within its depths, the faint outlines of something else. An echo of what it had been still visible in the second plate.
“Cut too deep,” she said, “and your image will keep coming back again and again, no matter how many times you rework it.”
Danika Stone, Intaglio: Dragons All The Way Down
“Mona was nice.”
Liv choked, the latté sloshing over the edge and onto her fingers. “You set that up to be mean,” she said, putting the cup back on the table.
Xander smirked. “I didn't actually. She's a cool chick.”
“Then why don't you date her?”
Xander's grin widened. “I did, dearest. That's why I know.”
“But I'm not gay!”
“But you might be bi,” Xander said. “You never actually said.” He waved away her protesting gasp. “I just thought you should check Mona out. Sexuality is a spectrum, Liv. Never know until you try.”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“She stared at the surface of her coffee, swirling in her mug. Tiny universes rose and fell in the liquid depths as the moment dragged out into uncomfortable territory. Oh god! her mind screamed. (God didn't answer.)”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“No use provoking the die-hard fans if you didn’t have to.”
Danika Stone, Internet Famous
“That, my dear Liv, was confidence. Talk to someone. Make jokes with them. Seem interested in what they are saying even if they're dull as mud.” He shrugged. “Anyone... anyone at all, can be glamoured if you know how.”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“He couldn't be more than forty-five, but Murray Miles was stooped, old before his time. The mountains of Alberta had the ability to bend those who lived here.
That, or it broke them.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Lou stood at the kitchen sink, her eyes unfocused on her hazy reflection in the window. Outside the sky was fading from steely blue to indigo. The mountain range beyond was a solid sheet of black, cut out by a child's sloppy scissors.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“She was tall and wiry, a dark smudge - a bruise or dirt - marring the light, inner surface of her forearm. Piercings dotted the shells of her ears, a tattoo peeking out from under her waistband. Drew’s breath caught and held as she turned and her face came into view. She was beautiful in the way that bonfires were - mesmerizing and more than a little dangerous - brilliant rather than pretty. Like those flames, she drew him forward.”
Danika Stone, Icarus
“The teens had gathered in an open clearing. Behind them, the banded lines of Avion Ridge formed a ragged edge between sky and ground, a rock wall looming above the trees. Ash shivered. The hikers stood in shadow here, the warmth of the day gone.”
Danika Stone, Switchback
“She took two steps toward the door, rolling her shoulders as if walking into a fight. It would be better to just get it over with. Rip the first day off like a bandage rather than wallowing in her misery like a baby.”
Danika Stone, Icarus
“She was all about the present. Paint and blood and lust. The now.”
Danika Stone, Intaglio: The Snake and the Coins
“Thursday afternoon, the dark clouds closed in, and by Friday morning a heavy rain was falling. The mountain peaks were hazy sentinels, disappearing into misty fog that clung to the valley.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“It was Red Rock Canyon. One of the most beautiful places in Waterton... in the Rockies, for that matter. And it was there, waiting for him to find it. As long as he was willing to look for it.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Breathtaking.
That was the word, Liv decided, which had convinced her to wear the ludicrous outfit, because no one - not the one, solitary boyfriend she'd had during high school, or the leering frat boys she avoided at college parties - had ever spoken to her with such reverence. And with Xander beaming down at her, she did feel beautiful.”
Danika Stone, All the Feels
“If you're trying to figure out why something's not working,” Old Lou had explained, “just focus on the things that do work. Move through those things first and eventually you'll find the one part that's stuck.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“An hour after they’d left the clearing, a heavy layer of fog filled the valley like a moist blanket. The trees grew into amorphous shapes, mountains gone.
Ash stopped dead in his tracks. He stared into the forest with wide eyes. “Whoa! D’you see that?!”
Vale jerked to a stop. “What? Where?!”
“There in the trees.” He pointed into the forest to where the rainy undergrowth grew thick with a hazy veil of grey-white mist. “The haze.”
“What about it?”
“Looks like game lag. But like… real lag. Real life lag.” Ash grinned at her, his brown eyes sparkling. “Like the forest is supposed to be there, but it’s not totally loaded by the computer yet.”
“That’s going to be trouble.”
“Why?”
Vale nodded to where Ash knew the mountaintops should be, but were no longer visible, caught in an otherworldly lag. “It means we can’t see the mountains.”
“So?”
“So we can’t see where we are going anymore.”
Ash frowned. “Er… yeah.”
“C’mon. Let’s keep walking.”
Danika Stone, Switchback
“With a calmness born from exhaustion and terror, the shaking of his body stilled, his heart slowing. The cougars were burnished gold in the moonlight, their shapes bright against the damp grey cliff. The two cubs moved across the ragged edge of the rocky outcrop, their mother a stone's throw below. Rich gasped as the female in front jumped to a lower ledge, balancing on the small precipice. She watched him warily, her head moving back and forth as if trying to ascertain what he was, and whether he was worth the bother.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“It's going to happen whether you like it or not,” he said quietly.
The top of the book dropped to display Susan's wrinkled gaze. “What's that?”
“Change,” Rich said. “It's inevitable.”
Danika Stone, Edge of Wild
“Sparrows were an interesting bird. They had dialects unique to each region they inhabited. If Waterton had a sound, it was the lonely sparrow, keening for its mate. The trill was peaceful, but melancholy.”
Danika Stone, The Dark Divide
