“Poor darling," he said, shaking his head, "you're not cold-hearted enough to be a detective. You only want the disagreeable people to be guilty, and I'm afraid you'll find that life isn't like that.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“Love makes a mess of things, doesn't it?' he said, as though he was speaking to himself. 'People are always falling in love with the wrong people. It happens over and over. It would be so much simpler if . . .”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“We looked into one another's eyes, and I think we both knew in that instant that the past was behind us. We could never be to each other what we had been once.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“I looked up to see Milo watching me. I raised my brows and affected what I hoped was an innocent expression.

"You are brewing trouble in that brain of yours," he said. "I recognize that look on your face."

"No such thing," I protested. "You haven't the faintest idea what I was thinking. I might have been considering ordering a new gown from Paris."

He shook his head. "I am also familiar with your ordering gowns from Paris face, and that is most definitely not it.”
Ashley Weaver, A Most Novel Revenge
“I stared at the list, as though willing the murderer's name to appear in red letters before my eyes. I felt I was so close to discovering something, if only I could find the right link, some bit of information that would point in the right direction. At least, that was how it worked in the mystery novels.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“When motives are prettily packaged they are much more easily obscured.”
Ashley Weaver, A Most Novel Revenge
“I knew, of course, that we couldn’t just go on sweeping things under the rug. There were so many things there already that the rug barely touched the floor anymore.”
Ashley Weaver, Death Wears a Mask
“We had become adept at not addressing the steadily growing distance between us.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“And so we find ourselves at the scene of another murder," Milo said, coming back to the sitting area. He didn't seem much troubled by the fact, for he lit another cigarette and settled back into his chair. I couldn't help but think that he looked particularly content.”
Ashley Weaver, The Essence of Malice
“Now was not the time to reflect on the irony of facing down the barrel of a gun held by a killer for the second time in as many months.”
Ashley Weaver, Death Wears a Mask
“He and I know each other fairly well, though I haven't seen him in a year or two. We were in a few scrapes together in our younger days."

I could only imagine what Milo's definition of "a few scrapes" was. He had once described the time he and the drunken heir to a dukedom had nearly been arrested for driving a car, the backseat full of scantily-clad women, into an Italian fountain as "a minor mishap.”
Ashley Weaver, The Essence of Malice
“The letter wasn't at all in Milo's style. He would have issued a much more elegant threat on vastly superior stationery.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“You haven't forgotten that we're having dinner with the Belangers this evening?" I asked.

"Of course not," he said. "I am hoping that one of them will let slip that they killed their father and we can lay the thing to rest.”
Ashley Weaver, The Essence of Malice
“IT IS AN impossibly great trial to be married to a man one loves and hates in equal proportions.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“Life holds darkness and light, and sometimes one must step into the shadows to see which will prevail.'

The curtain fell, and there was a moment of silence before applause burst forth from the audience. It was not the tepid appreciation of polite spectators, but the thunderous approval of those who marveled at what they had just seen.”
Ashley Weaver, An Act of Villainy
“Do you want some coffee?” he asked, motioning to the pot. I shook my head. I couldn’t abide the stuff. If and when we ran out of tea in this country, I would be prepared to go to battle with the Germans myself.”
Ashley Weaver, A Peculiar Combination
“In the meantime, the porter's gone. How much time until we reach our next stop?'

I glanced at my wristwatch, an absurd fluttery feeling in my stomach. 'Nearly an hour.'

'Excellent,' he said, lowering his mouth again to mine. 'Let's make the most of it.'

And so we did.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“Dinner with old friends is often so much less tiresome than dinner with a group of strangers.”
Ashley Weaver, Death Wears a Mask
“He was, as it turns out, correct. I dislike it intensely when he is right.”
Ashley Weaver, A Most Novel Revenge
“In the novels, it always seemed best to keep the suspect talking. Inevitably, help would arrive. I really held out no hope for such an opportune occurrence, but it seemed the best course of action would be to distract her until I could determine what to do.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“André had confirmed what I already knew. First, the motives for Helios Belanger's death were plentiful. Second, my husband was an absolute wretch.”
Ashley Weaver, The Essence of Malice
“This was the last thing we needed. I was sure we made quite a pair, me in my evening gown and Milo in his bloodstained shirt. 'Let's hurry to the car, Milo.' I made a move to descend the front steps, ready to push my way through the crowd, but Milo stopped me with a hand on my arm.

'Just a moment, darling.'

'What is it?'

'Let's give them something to put in the gossip columns first, shall we?' And he pulled me to him and kissed me thoroughly in the blinding glare of the flashbulbs.”
Ashley Weaver, Death Wears a Mask
“Life is an adventure to be certain," Milo replied. "Especially if one has a nose for trouble. Isn't that right, my perceptive darling?"

Sometimes one could have too much adventure. I was suddenly very weary of this holiday. It would be nice to get back to England, to rest at Thornecrest and enjoy our London flat. I was ready to go home.

"Can we go back to London at once?" I asked Milo.

"Very well, darling." He came to me and pulled me into his arms. "But let's not start packing just yet."

I looked up at him smiling. "You don't mind us going home? I know how much you love your nights spent running wild in Paris."

"Je n'aime que toi, ma chérie," he murmured, leaning to kiss me.

Emile seemed to appreciate the sentiment for he screeched loudly, clapping his paws together with approval and smacking his lips.

Milo glanced at the monkey with an annoyed sigh.

"That will do, Emile. You've been most helpful, but I'm afraid I've had enough of your interference for one day."

And then he swept me up into his arms and carried me to the bedroom, kicking the door firmly closed behind us.”
Ashley Weaver, The Essence of Malice
“I had always prided myself on my independence, but at that moment what I longed for was someone with whom I could talk and share my troubles. It was in moments like these that I felt the hollowness of my marriage the keenest. In those whirlwind days of my courtship I had failed to take into account the fact that storms of life called for stronger stuff than the easy flow of smooth endearments and witty banter.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“I set my napkin down and rose. “I have no secrets from you, Milo.” I turned as I reached the door and flashed his smile back at him. “If I had a lover, I would certainly inform you of it.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“He waved a hand. 'Never mind. It doesn't matter. Perhaps I did look guilty there for a while. In any event, it was interesting being the prime suspect for a moment or two.'

'If only we'd confided in one another,' I said. 'But we've never been very good at that, have we?'

'It could be worse. At least you've never tried to drown me in my bathtub.'

I let out a sound that was some cross between a laugh and a sigh. 'Do be serious, Milo.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“Cinderella, Stay in My Arms”
Ashley Weaver, A Peculiar Combination
“I seldom suspect people unduly, Mrs. Ames.”
Ashley Weaver, Murder at the Brightwell
“This was the second time I’d been forced to open a safe in an evening gown in the presence of Major Ramsey”
Ashley Weaver, Locked in Pursuit
