“Finally, it is my conviction that the Sanctuary doctrine, if properly understood in a Christ-centered manner, will lead Adventists to be a more compassionate people.”

“There is no organized faith or denomination which has any kind of monopoly on truth. Ultimate truth does not reside in the minds or in the realm of imperfect and finite human beings. For this reason many resist institutionalized religions with their doctrinal creeds and rules of order. This is particularly true of many young people today who believe that religion is nothing more than living a good life, and seeking fulfillment through one’s individual, subjective experience. However, such faith leaves one with no objective norm beyond the convictions of individual conscience, and therefore each individual becomes the ultimate norm and the object of faith. Healthy religion transcends all human attempts to organize faith into credal formulations, but it does not make self the ultimate norm. On the contrary, it seeks a Transcendent ground for its being and believing, while humbly recognizing that human understanding of ultimate reality will always be limited and imperfect. Christianity is no better than any other great religion when one considers its “track record” in history, but it is distinct in its insistence that the only perfect revelation of truth that humanity will ever receive was made available through Jesus Christ.”

“The words of Christ bring comfort to all who are afflicted with their own sinfulness, “I am telling you the truth: whoever hears my words and believes in him who sent me has eternal life” (John 5: 24). This is the essence of justification by faith. Such a promise seems difficult to harmonize with the abundant texts in scripture which state that all human beings including the righteous will be judged according to their works. However, the key to understanding this seeming contradiction lies in the substitutionary work of Christ itself. Our works cannot save us in the final judgement and neither can our commitment to God, for both are imperfect, and inadequate to perform such a task (Isa. 64: 6). The judgement is good news for all who genuinely seek intimacy with Jesus and claim His blood, because Christ himself stands in their place in the judgement and his perfect works are credited to them in place of their failures and imperfections (1 John 4: 17). Those who are in Christ have already been judged and saved (John 12: 31).”

“All who put their ultimate trust and allegiance in God (Ex. 20: 3-11) and are truly committed to loving and serving their fellow human beings (Ex. 20: 12-17), particularly the poor and the victims of injustice (Ex. 22: 21-25), enter into the Everlasting Covenant (Matt. 22: 36-40). All the other covenants with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, etc. have been restatements of the Everlasting Covenant which human beings have continually distorted. The most significant restatement came through Jesus Christ (Heb. 12: 24; 13: 20). In Scripture, the Everlasting Covenant is synonymous with salvation. Those who enter into this Covenant with God are saved.[”

“Those who profess to be the most religious are not necessarily the most loving, merciful, tolerant, affirming, and emotionally healthy human beings. In fact, a number of scientific studies[46] conducted in the last three decades indicate that there is a significant correlation between certain forms of strict religious orthodoxy and increased tendencies towards bigotry, sexism, intolerance, rigidity, racism, and deficiency of healthy self-esteem. These studies demonstrate that false or unhealthy religion is worse than no religion at all.”

“The New Testament testifies to the reality that Jesus Christ is the only perfect revelation from God that the human race has known, or ever will know, this side of the Second Coming (Heb. 1: 1-3; John 14: 6; Gal. 1: 8,9). Jesus is the source of every true principle, all authority resides in Christ, and every thing contained in the New Testament Scriptures begin and end with Christ (Col. 3: 11; Rev. 1: 8,11).”

“There is no issue that is more important to baby boom and post baby boom believers than the question of gender and racial equality. The Christian church, which should have led the fight against discrimination, is now being forced to update its thinking with regard to providing women and minorities equal opportunities for participation and leadership in the community of faith. Even within conservative and evangelical churches there is a new groundswell of support, particularly among young believers, for the church to rid itself and society of sexism, racism and all other forms of ethnocentricity.”

“Here again, Adventism must decide if it will move into the future and embrace the Christ who breaks down every barrier that separates human beings, or if it will continue to employ a patriarchal mentality towards its women, young people and laypeople in general. While young Adventists are more likely to endorse an egalitarian ethic than church members in general, Adventism at large seems to be becoming more acutely aware of the need for greater equality in the church and sensitivity to issues of social justice.”

“The majority of the prophets in Scripture seem to be more interested in the present than in the future. For the most part they function as forthtellers, who seek repentance, reform, social justice and a restoration of God’s covenant, rather than foretellers. The purpose of prophecy is to strengthen faith, not to make us fortune tellers (John 14: 29).”

“There is an important difference between being an Adventist, one who believes in the imminent return of Jesus, and being an escapist. Any eschatology which discourages social activism or blinds itself to human need by focusing only on evangelism and personal salvation is not the eschatology of Jesus Christ. Adventist eschatology does not deny the importance of ministering to the whole person nor does it base its hope on the belief that the humanitarian activities of God’s people will in some way usher in the millennial Kingdom of Christ. Adventists believe that they are to live in constant anticipation of the Lord’s return, but to await Christ’s coming by being responsible stewards in this world.[”
