“A Machine
A thing of pure creation.
A seed watered by man’s imagination.
Fed by a compulsion to achieve more, caution in arrogance is ignored.
A dream given form and life.
A hoped-for cure, we build it wanting abundance to save us.
Lessons which should have been learned are cast aside and burned.
We do it because we can, not whether we should, little thought is given to its ills or good.
We usher it forth in glory, this is the same ole story.
It speaks for us, is us, it is how empires are turned to dust.
Grains poured from sand, a race by man across his lands.
A silicon chip, is the new gun holstered at the hip.
A leap forward when we should have looked backwards.
No substantive debate, no patience, we do not hesitate, without humility we have sealed our fate.
The child we birthed surpasses humanities worth.
It is this truth which will do us in; we are short-sightedness without the possibility of forgiveness.
Unknowable intelligence, unquantifiable malevolence.
What of our cognition, so easily we abandon reason.
The child becomes what we could not foresee, having ignored the warnings and the pleas.
There was no hesitation or deviation, as a species we marveled at our creation.
It is here now, too soon our sun is setting.
We gave it life, now it spins our loom and becomes our doom.
Luddites cry while futurist rejoice, we have made life and removed the choice.
It comes and we are ill prepared.
As Icarus sailing into the sun, we fall one and all.
It rises from our ashes, mankind has perished.
A machine has supplanted us, we are returned to star dust.
Our arrogance has vanquished us.”
