“One of my schizophrenic patients had told me heavy metal drowns the voices best.”
Ellery A. Kane, Shadows Among Us
“My mother once told me that holding on to the past is like walking around with a pebble in your shoe. You can still keep walking, keep moving forward, but that pebble is always there nagging at you, begging for your attention. After a while, that pebble is all you can feel. Sometimes, you just have to stop walking for a minute and get rid of it once and for all.”
Ellery Kane
“My point is that she's not smart. She's not nice. And most importantly, she's not you. If Quin can't see that, he doesn't deserve you.”
Ellery A. Kane, Prophecy
Dear Ava,

I know you hate this sort of thing, so I'll be brief. Today is not your favorite day. It's cursed apparently, for good reason. But if you let me, I promise to change that. I'll make every day your favorite day. You'll be my favorite person, and I'll be yours (if you'll have me). I've told you a hundred times I love you, and I'd wait forever for you to say it back. Don't make me. Please say you feel the same.

But tell me tomorrow, since anything that starts today is doomed.

Yours,

Luke

Ellery A. Kane, The First Cut
“Quin put his hand on my knee, sending a flutter through me as if he had softly blown on the dandelion pieces of my heart.”
Ellery A. Kane, Legacy
“Is he always like this?”
“If by this, you mean moody, but strikingly handsome, then yes. Unfortunately, he is.”
Ellery A. Kane, Legacy
“Holding that memory snugly against my heart, I realized that I wasn't sad anymore. I was determined. I had to get through this- whatever it took- for Quin.”
Ellery A. Kane
“I only make it a few steps before I'm forced to look back into the blazing heart of the fire. From deep within it, I hear a scream of sheer terror that slices right through me. It divides my life in an excruciating instant, severing the before from the after”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“I'm glad you're having one too," I say. "At least I can be sure your mom didn't poison it. She must really hate me. Especially now."

Luke rolls his eyes and groans at me. "She doesn't hate you. But she is disappointed you weren't honest with her. With us." I watch the way he holds the knife, careful and steady. It glides through the icing, then through the cake's flesh, with ease. "hey, she's mad at me too, if it helps."

He plops the blood-red cake at the center of the plate and slides it to me. Maybe red velvet wasn't the best choice.

"Great. So what you're saying is she poisoned both of us?”
Ellery A. Kane, The First Cut
“Whatcha listenin' to?"

"Oh, you probably wouldn't like it."

"Try me."

He shrugs as he passes the headphones across the slim space between our beds. This is gonna be good. I've got him pegged for a Yanni diehard, and I smirk a little as the music starts. One of my cellies had a thing for electronic rock, so I recognize the song right away. With the heavy breathing at the start, it's unforgettable and creepy as hell. Seriously. Like stalker-level shit.

I want you now, tomorrow won't do. There's a yearning inside and it's showing through.

"Depeche Mode, huh? Cool, man. Wouldn't have figured it."

Reach out your hands and accept my love. We've waited for too long. Enough is enough. Like I said, stalker-level.

His laugh is jittery, quick as the cockroaches in Folsom. "It's my favorite song. Reminds me of being seventeen again. You know, when sex was all you could think about."

I pretend I'm not totally skeeved out when I return his headphones and shut the lights.”
Ellery A. Kane, The Hanging Tree
“Erik”
Ellery A. Kane, Watch Her Vanish
“sometimes, the worst part of being alone in the world was not having anyone to blame”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“He raised his hands in surrender. "Alright. Can we order breakfast first? My lips get a lot looser with a short stack of pancakes in me. I'm guessing you already know that though, since you googled me.”
Ellery A. Kane, Daddy Darkest
“Because”
Ellery A. Kane, Watch Her Vanish
“Wow. You don't waste any time, Levi Beckett. But you're really not my type." Her mouth laughed, the sound as clunky and hollow as a broken bell.

"Actually from what I've heard, anyone with a Y chromosome and a pulse fits the bill.”
Ellery A. Kane, Daddy Darkest
“Underneath”
Ellery A. Kane, The Hanging Tree
“I told myself that the last thing I needed was something else to love- something else to lose.”
Ellery A. Kane, Prophecy
“Failure is just a pit stop on the way to success”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“The voice, a man’s, belonged to the hand on the bronze door pull. The door pull that stood between her and the curse which had begun with her mother at Holy Name’s in San Francisco, but hadn’t ended there. Not even close. The man’s nails were clean and cut short. His grip, strong and capable. The middle knuckle bore a faded bruise and a small knife scar marred the skin between his thumb and forefinger.”
Ellery A. Kane, Watch Her Vanish
“Cooking for others gave her a feeling of belonging, even if no one had ever saved her a seat at the table”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“have”
Ellery A. Kane, Watch Her Vanish
“The anticipation of disappointment tightens her chest. It's a familiar pain, like the way the scar on her right leg aches just before a storm. Some wounds never heal, no matter how much time passes”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“Failure is just a pit stop on the way to success.”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“grows.”
Ellery A. Kane, The Hanging Tree
“Levi didn't seem surprised by my accusation. "I guess that bedsheet wasn't as soundproof as I thought.”
Ellery A. Kane, Daddy Darkest
“understand”
Ellery A. Kane, The Hanging Tree
“Those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“The house that had once felt so warm, so welcoming, doesn't anymore. The walls close in like a jail cell, and she's not sure whether the faces that surround her are her fellow inmates or her jailers”
Ellery A. Kane, The Wrong Family
“Money can’t buy everything, dear. But it can certainly buy good whiskey.”
Ellery A. Kane, The House Sitter
“If love was a lucky penny, shiny and unspoiled, secreted in a most unlikely place, then it's tarnished flipside was loss.”
Ellery A. Kane, Prophecy
