“Nick looked at Jackie. Her head was buried in her hands. She was more flushed than Justin. In fact, she wasn't pink—she was fire engine red. "You're not sick now, are you?" he asked.
"I am so embarrassed," said Jackie. "Do you two have any idea who that was?"
"Let me take a wild guess at it?" said Nick. "Ummm...Nancy?"
"Yes, Nancy," said Jackie. "Nancy Copeland! She is the whole reason I want to be a 46er. She climbed all 46 high peaks in one winter."
"In one winter?" said Nick. "Wow, she didn't look crazy.”

“And next is RICE for the ankle." She smiled at the little girl who had latched on to the bottom of Nick's shorts. "We're going to fix mama'a boo boo."
"You brought rice in your pack?" asked Justin. "What didn't you bring?"
Nick offered to help. "Do we have to cook it?" he asked. "I'll build the fire."
"RICE stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation," Jackie explained, as she worked.”

“That was pathetic," said Jackie. She stood at the base of the small boulder with her hands on her hips. "You two wouldn't last five minutes climbing a high peak.”

“Wait a minute," said Nick. He was stunned and there was panic in his voice. "We can't stay up here all night." Movement in the sky caught his attention. "Look, it's the vulture," he said, and dropped to the ground on his knees. "I knew it, we're goners.”

“And please stop calling him Bucky. That's so disrespectful." She looked sternly at Nick for a moment. "Anyway, Ranger Bill said it's a sign of a really healthy lake if loons are living on it."
"As mayor I vote that Jackie stop treating me like my mother," said Nick.”

“May I help you?" she whispered.
Justin and Jackie looked around. There was no one else in the room.
"Why is she whispering?" Justin whispered to Jackie.
"I may be old, but I'm not deaf young man," whispered the old woman behind the counter. She never stopped smiling. "We whisper because this...(she stopped and gestured dramatically with one hand sweeping across the entire room)...is a library."
"And this...is really weird," whispered Justin even more softly out of the corner of his mouth toward his friend.”
