Cheryl Anne Gardner is a hopeless dark romantic, lives in a haunted house, and often channels the spirits of Poe, Kafka, and de Sade. She prefers novellas and flash fiction to writing bios because she always seems to forget what point of view she is in. When she isn’t writing, she likes to chase marbles on a glass floor, eat lint, play with sharp objects, and make taxidermy dioramas with dead flies. Her writing has been described as "beautifully grotesque," her characters "deliciously disturbed." Her short fiction has been published in dozens of journals including Dustbin, Hobo Pancakes, Carnage Conservatory, Pure Slush, Negative Suck, Danse Macabre, and at The Molotov Cocktail among others. She lives with her husband on the East Coast USA, ...more

Twenty Years – The Kissing Room

I cannot believe it’s been twenty years since I wrote this story. It’s still my most popular book, even if it isn’t my personal favorite out of everything I have written. It was a reflection on some of the darker times in my own life, and I am glad I put it to paper. Happy 20th, Merle and Lain.

“I don't write plot-driven stories. Plotting feels too contrived and constraining to me. I posit. I agitate. I present contradictions, and in that respect, I suppose I write belief-driven stories. The point A to point B happens when the main character questions a belief they have at the beginning only to realize at the end that they were wrong.

The wade through the mud is what interests me.”
Cheryl Anne Gardner

“Debasement? Yes, I write about debasement. I write about a lot of nasty things: obsession, violence, sex, religion, politics, death, and mental illness, but all this is just subject matter. I simply present arguments. Fact. Flawed logic. I write about humanity -- I write about monsters.

And we are all just adulterated meat.”
Cheryl Anne Gardner

“I loved them all equally, from the short story, to the poem, to the play, for nothing could touch me so deeply as a well-placed word.”
Cheryl Anne Gardner (The Thin Wall)

Topics Mentioning This Author

“There are always flowers for those who want to see them.”
Henri Matisse

“Other than the voices in my head, I think I’m pretty normal.”
Tom Upton, Tiny Voices

“Women have the right to be whatever kind of woman they want to be. Whatever kind of feminist they want to be, or not. I’m a woman writer. Some of my fiction is soft and poetic. Some of my fiction is horrifying and aggressive. My being a woman has no bearing on how I write. Or what I choose to write about. My being a woman is just my gender. It has very little to do with who I am as a person. So don’t box me in or tell me how to be GIRL. It’s the only thing I’ve figured out how to do, and I do it my way.”
Cheryl Anne Gardner

“Expectations serve no purpose except to hinder experience.

When all expectations are abandoned, life becomes an adventure instead of a well-plotted journey.”
