I'm a psychiatrist/novelist. My novel: The End of Miracles, draws deeply from my experiences on psychiatric units and with patients. I also write regularly for, and have my own page, as an Expert for Psychology Today : https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/... Other articles have appeared in MariaShriver.com, The New Republic and Vogue.
I'm a clinician, scientific researcher and teacher at the University of Michigan's Medical School. Many of my scientific articles are about conditions related to women and reproduction, such as the first investigations of women’s reactions to the use of fetal monitors during labor. This interest in the psychology of women related to reproduction is at the core of The End of Miracles. So you could say that my

Bringing pleasure to other readers, in this way giving back for all of the pleasure I have derived from books.
Also, as a psychiatrist, it fascinates me to hear the particular connections different readers make to the book; within their overall excitement about it, each has a uniquely different take on some character, some event, some experience or feeling described in the book that particularly resonates with them. I am realizing that every book as it is being read is the co-creation of the writer and the reader. (less)

“Something out of nothing, she thought. The perfect parallel to pregnancy.”
Monica Starkman, The End of Miracles

“Pain was always cruel, but it was cruelest when it came to children. Sometimes she would see a child she recognized from a prior hospitalization, going through the admissions procedure. Crying not in the indignant frightened way first-timers cried, but weeping silently, as if grieving the inevitable separation and pain to come”
Monica Starkman, The End of Miracles

“Each night they left the balcony door open so they could hear the surf lapping against the sand. And, once when the wind was high, and the waves pounded against the beach, he'd smoothed her hair and whispered, after having proved it so, 'Sex is like a storm; it gathers, it roars. And then it settles into stillness.”
