“El hombre que vende pajaritos de todos los colores venía por la calle con sus jaulas. Los gorriones y las golondrinas no cantaban, pero el canario y la alondra sí. Don Manuel Arteiros sí que sabía enjaular los pájaros. Durante horas y horas esperaba su llegada. Se mantenía con la cuerda en la mano y cuando el pajarillo entraba a picotear dentro del cesto hecho de raíces, ¡zas!, halaba la cuerda y el infeliz quedaba prisionero. Durante años y años Don Manuel se ocupó de robarle músicas al campo, de descompletar la sinfonía amarilla del canario que canta en los trigales maduros. Don Manuel pasaba con su carreta llena de jaulas, y los niños del convento compraban los gorriones para liberarlos luego, de modo que Don Manuel vendió más de una vez el mismo gorrión.”
