This isn’t a romance. Not even a dark romance. It's a bunch of trauma sort of squished together and presented as a story. There's no growing love, or clear partner choice. The counselor who- very professionally- offered to take her into his pack when he first met her? The hot neighbors? Or her original pack who are all either abusive or compliant in abuse? I have absolutely no idea and not in a good way. I'm 3/4 through, I should know who the end goal is by now. I should also care, instead of just really hoping she just finally grows a spine and asks to leave.

I particularly disliked the bit where the second omega was abused in the exact same way as the first one had been and that was framed as progress and a wonderful thing.
Yay everyone gets to be disgusting arseholes who sit back and let domestic violence happen without comment! Equal opportunity!

Also why does every third alpha work for the registry? They dunk on it as evil, but they all work there? At least the counselor violating boundaries was just normal behavior and HIPAA doesn't exist. I would personally be super cool with someone at my gym telling me they know I'm traumatized because my partners made me watch them have sex with their girlfriend in my bed. Again framed as cool. Cool, cool, everyone is super fine and healthy here.

Why is being thrown out of the pack such a huge threat to Jasper? He doesn't seem to be getting anything from it. He's literally described as standing during movie nights, like a prison guard watching the inmates.

Why is Vee attracting every random alpha in the world yet acting like this is her last chance and no one will ever want her if she doesn't stay? It doesn't seem like a character flaw, more like a world building flaw. You can't have omegas be precious and rare AND have an omega with no tangible issues act like her life is over forever because she broke up with her boyfriends once before. None of the alphas she's meeting in day to day life seem to give a crap. It feels like her insecurity has no basis.

It's a shame because the prose is pretty good. But it's not a romance. It's a... drama? I guess? It makes me feel like the end goal is not a HEA but the two omegas driving off a cliff into the sunset and a fiery death. Hopefully for everyone. ...more

I'm not that far in. I know the author had a disclaimer about how this isn't emblematic of real life BDSM but... it was genuinely shocking to have her experience a break in, then within the hour be in some strangers' home and reading through a list o I'm not that far in. I know the author had a disclaimer about how this isn't emblematic of real life BDSM but... it was genuinely shocking to have her experience a break in, then within the hour be in some strangers' home and reading through a list of kinks she's willing to try. Even without the BDSM angle that was freakin whiplash. What happened to calling the cops? Securing your house? Changing the locks? Warning the other people whose keys were on that ring? Pausing for five minutes after going into shock from a negative experience similar to assault so you can calm down before going through a list of kinks you might enjoy?

This book is just candy to read. It's fun. But it also only takes a couple of paragraphs to have them say "we dealt with the stuff that means we're not abusive monsters forcing kinks down her throat after a trauma".

The author should have either established the kinks stuff before that moment, or established that they let her eat, call the cops, and change out of her work clothes, or even just exist in what is supposed to be a safe space for five minutes, before making her think about whether she wants to wear diapers or be electrocuted.

I have had my house broken into and the idea of someone doing that in the immediate aftermath makes my skin crawl. I can tell it's not supposed to be that deep, but I just had to point it out.

Yeah, having read further now, this really could have been fixed by having them hang out even once after meeting the first time. All her initial interactions with Aiden seem ridiculous, because she keeps saying 'I don't know him yet' but she's exchanged less than 5 sentences with some of these other guys. She met them, was immediately spanked and sent into subspace, and then saw them for less than five minutes at her dad's house.

The next time she saw them was immediately after her house was broken in. It seems ridiculous to say that Aiden, who she met the day immediately after all that, is somehow more of a stranger than the other guys.

I know romance doesn't have time for things like 'this is my favorite movie' before we get to top five positions, but then we can all learn together instead of locking out the guy who was five minutes late.

You aren't entitled to someone's time because they were nice to you once a year ago. She's like an incel chasing a waitress who smiled at him once.

- if you're at a party in someone's house, you don't go way out of the main areas and randomly enter a bedroom uninvited. You particularly don't do that in the house of the guy you're stalking.

- If you're constantly bumping into people, it's possible you are the problem.

I know the author is trying to make it into a neurodivergent thing, but FMC seems perfectly self aware, just intensely self-centered and unwilling to compromise her own wants for other people's needs.

She also comes across as... to be frank, not particularly bright. Like... all her questions are very shallow, she seems to think New Scientist is the cracking edge of knowledge (don't get me wrong, NS is great, but it's popular science for the layman, not a proper journal with actual studies) and the very basics of the subject she's supposed to be studying and obsessed with for years have to be explained to her like she's five multiple times. I get the feeling she thinks she's smart because she took an IQ test online and it told her she was 'definitely a genius'.

PS I know this is just me being more mean than usual but I always find it funny when a character is like "man, I just have such diverse taste in music!! I love everything from [top 20s pop band] to [top 20s pop band]. I'm so unique I even like [top 30s pop band from five years ago]! But you might not have heard of them, they're so obscure. I'm just such a deep person, no one understands my eclectic taste. Anyway here's something you've probably never heard before by this little band I discovered.
