AJ Knight is originally from the Midwest. Her parents and two of her three sisters moved to Florida when she was twelve years old. It was there that she began writing poetry and studying music. Through her high school years, she attended a program for the arts and majored in music performance as a flautist. Just before her senior year, she met her husband who later joined the US Navy. While he was in the military, they lived in Jacksonville, Florida; Bremerton, Washington; and Groton, Connecticut. After eleven years of service, her husband was honorably discharged and they moved back to Midwest to be near family.
