Amazon Marketing Services (AMS) is a SCAM and a MASSIVE Waste of Money – THE TRUTH

AMAZON MARKETING SERVICES IS A RIP-OFF

AND REPRESENTS A PATHETIC ROI (Return On Investment)

It’s about time somebody told the truth about what a complete waste of time and money Amazon Marketing Services is for authors trying to promote their Kindle books.

I’ve used this service now since before Christmas and tried various different methods such as choosing keywords (based on extensive research), sponsored ads and permutations thereof.

The end result is simple, I’ve spent a fortune for very, very meagre results.

I have to tell you this, I stopped JUST IN TIME!

For the moment I can just afford the Amazon Marketing Services Bill from the profits because I’m fortunate enough to have an EXCELLENT PRODUCT PAGE and PAPERBACK versions of all my books to support the MASSIVE LOSS I’ve made on Kindle Books.

If you are looking to promote your Kindle book or books DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on Amazon Marketing Services.

AMS 1

You may be looking at the image and the figures and thinking, “hey that doesn’t look so bad” but the truth is that all those sales represent sales of paperback books which generate a fairly decent amount of profit. However, the main reason to use Amazon Marketing Services is supposed to be to generate Kindle sales. You cannot select paperback books and AMS is only accessible from Kindle Direct Publishing. If you don’t have paperback versions of the Kindle books you are advertizing then forget it, you might as well flush your money down the toilet. For the eight months we’ve been using Amazon Marketing Services we have shown a 0% increase in Kindle book sales, we were shifting about the same amount ourselves.

AMS 3

There are a lot of people discovering the exact same thing, I’m not alone in this but other blog posts will tell you to stick at it, change your keywords or improve your product page but we’ve done all those things and more. All our keywords have been thoroughly researched and tested using various paid and free tools and you can see from the figures that we generate a massive amount of impressions. Impressions are good though right? Of course not, do you remember the name of the sponsored product that popped up next to the product you were actually looking at? No, nobody is interested unless they buy. Let’s look at the maths. Since we started advertizing we’ve had 1,828,001 impressions resulting in about $30 of sales.

AMS 6

This is pitiful and to put it simply, it just doesn’t work. People may be shopping on Amazon and buying products they weren’t necessarily looking for but certainly not enough to justify the price per keyword. And what’s this? Look at the average price per click here, that’s almost 50c! We must have set the maximum price per click (the bid) at something like a dollar a click to win that bid eh? Again, no. The maximum price was set to 25c, the price recommended by AMS but they just decided to ignore that completely. Because of the delay in reporting (THREE DAYS!!!), we’d spent a small fortune winning those useless bids and for what returns? Yep, you guessed it…0 SALES!

Amazon Marketing Services 4

Another thing worth bearing in mind is that you cannot make a large profit on Kindle books. You choose the percentage profit 30 or 70% and whether you pay the delivery costs. Then you set the price of the book. Obviously, as a self-published author who has to do the majority of the marketing yourself you can’t charge enough to make enough of a profit to justify wasting it on futile Amazon Marketing Campaigns.

AMS 5

This month we’ve spent over $50 on AMS and it has generated about $10 of kindle book sales. We actually sold more copies before we began using it. Thanks for nothing Amazon. My advice to anyone thinking of using AMS to promote kindle books is DO NOT USE AMAZON MARKETING SERVICES, look at other ways of promoting your book, like Adwords or Facebook Marketing, instead.

Amazon Marketing Services 7

Have you had a similar experience with Amazon Marketing Services or have you actually managed to sell some books?

We’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments below.

All the best,

Mark Watson

Are Bull Terriers Dangerous to Children?

Join the debate…
Are Bull Terriers dangerous to children?
The Bull Terrier is sweet-tempered, yet also rowdy and clownish, full of fire and determination.
This muscular, forceful, vigorous dog lives best with active families, for he has a high energy level that comes in bursts.
He needs frequent, brisk walks, occasional vigorous games of ball, and total immersion in the family, i.e. LOTS of companionship and interactive play sessions.
Yet Bull Terriers have been known to attack children, the elderly, their owners – anyone that happens to be in their path. If the dog feels provoked or startled, it has been known to bite.

Many owners swear that their pet would never attack them.
You may be wondering what our own thoughts are on this, after all, we chose to make Milo a Bully, he could just as easily have been a Corgi or a Rottweiler.

Pablo, originally from South Africa, explains the importance of the family bull terrier in the neighbourhood he grew up, “In South Africa you need a dog that is excellent with children but also able to protect your family against an intruder, and there ARE intruders.

A Bull Terrier will lie at the feet of a child playing in the garden all day but if if someone comes into the garden intending to do harm then the dog needs to be able to react very, very quickly.

Bullys are like that, they have incredible patience with small children but can turn protective in a flash.”
The fact is, however, dog attacks do occur and even against the dogs’ owners.
Do you think this is the fault of the breed?

Their aggressive temperament matched with their strength historically saw them bred as fighting dogs so some argue their genetic makeup is rather fierce.

However, many Bully lovers believe the fault of aggressive dogs lies not with the dog itself but with the owner and particularly how the Bully has been trained.
What do you think?
Is the portrayal accurate?

Bull Terrier: The Best Bull Terrier Books Of All Time

The TOP Ten Bully Bull Terrier Books EVER…
Looking for the perfect book for your Bull Terrier loving friends or kids? Here are the ten best Bull Terrier books as picked by us, do you agree? Have we missed any? Let us know in the comments below.
10: Rosa Moves to Town (Stella) Hardcover – Mar 1997

by Barbro Lindgren (Author), Eva Eriksson (Illustrator)
Rosa is a spirited little dog who looks mostly like an anvil headed English bull terrier. She loves to chew things and will chew and swallow any object left in her path.

Her owner loves her dearly and will move mountains for her. When Rosa swallows one of her rubber squeaky toys, her owner has her admitted to a pet hospital where the dog undergoes surgery to remove the rubber toy.

Hospitals are frightening places for anybody of any age. To her credit, the author helps keep some of that fear at bay by having a dog patient as opposed to a human patient. Using this distancing technique makes it easier to laugh at the notion of a pet hospital (such places do exist) and cheer for the recovery of the avaricious little dog.
Editorial Reviews
From Kirkus Reviews

Rosa is a spunky dog, a veritable Hoover of the canine realm, ingesting every interesting morsel she encounters whether it is food or not. She and her “aunt” have moved to the city where she has to remain on a leash, but where the streets are full of delicious leftovers and there are always new dogs to meet. Rosa’s foraging goes too far when she swallows chunks of her rubber toys and must be admitted to the hospital for surgery. It’s a minor setback in Rosa’s book, for she is ready for her next adventure when her ecstatic aunt picks her up. Lindgren renders the entire piece from a dog’s view, leaving it to readers to determine that Rosa’s aunt is really her owner, and reporting without comment on the puppy with “only one eye because the other one had popped out when she was fighting with her own mother.” Scary.

9: The Costume Party Hardcover – August 4, 2005

by Victoria Chess (Author, Illustrator)
Madame Coco’s little family was very, very, bored, and Madame Coco was becoming very, very, annoyed. The family could only go outside for a tiny moment at a time ( we won’t tell you what for), and the house seemed very small, and very messy.
Luckily, Madame Coco remembered what she and her cousins used to do when they were little and it rained and rained – they would have a Costume Party! (A perfect way to spend your time when it’s raining cats and dogs.)
Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
What does a family do when the rainy days go on and on? If your name is Madame Coco and your family consists of five chubby white dogs, the answer is to throw a costume party. Since the pups don’t fit into any of the old costumes in the attic, they will make their own, and a prize will be awarded for the best one. The party is planned with food, decorations, games, and the contest. The contest results in a tie, and the prize is a kitty named Oscar who next year dresses up as (what else?) a white dog. The wonderfully detailed pictures are hilarious and expressive. This is a great activity-producing selection for a rainy day, or any day. –Beverly Combs, Webb Middle School, Garland, TX

8: Chalk & Cheese Hardcover – October 21, 2008

by Tim Warnes (Author, Illustrator)
“From the illustrator of Rise and Shine and Jesus Loves Me comes the tale of a limitless friendship between a New York City Bull Terrier and an English country mouse.”
Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Many of the most endearing friendships in children’s literature, from Pooh and Piglet to Laura Seeger’s Dog and Bear (Roaring Brook, 2007), turn on the formulaic but charming incongruity of the main characters’ personalities; so it is here. An obscure British idiom, defined as two things that have nothing in common, serves as both title and premise for this “odd couple’s” day in New York City. Cheese, the garrulous, hyperbolic English country mouse, and Chalk the Bull Terrier, who is his long-suffering New York tour guide, are introduced through their postcard correspondence that cleverly depicts their dissimilarities. Cheese, the excitable tourist, tries every Big Apple experience while Chalk is his patient host for a very long day of sightseeing. Narrative text is brief, and most of the story’s momentum is expressed through comic-style panels and speech balloons, which in Cheese’s case are often exclamatory and colored cheddar yellow. The contrast between the friends is heightened by Warnes’s watercolor and pencil cartoons, rendering Cheese as tiny, but with a big mouth, and Chalk as large and pleasant but somewhat stolid. If Cheese’s lively vociferations become tedious to some adults, they will no doubt entertain children, who will find his game enthusiasm for everything from subway cockroaches to skating at Rockefeller Center (“Splat!”) simply hilarious.

From Booklist
Chalk and Cheese are friends, but they’re as different as, well, chalk and cheese. Chalk, a white Bull Terrier, lives in N.Y.C., and pen-pal Cheese, an English mouse, comes to visit. In expansive, humor-laden art, some drawn in cartoon-strip style, the duo gad about New York, starting in a typical coffee shop and taking subways and taxis to familiar tourist sites like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. There, Cheese hopes he’ll get to see King Kong; instead he gets lost, lured away by the aroma of warm nuts. The duo fall out with each other but always find gentle ways to get back together. What’s best is the sheer exuberance both feel about New York, to which this story is a love letter. That said, the usual preschool audience may be too young to appreciate the city references (to say nothing of the allusion to chalk and cheese). But slightly older kids, more familiar with some of the famous sights, will enjoy both the travelogue and the unlikely friendship.

7: A Guide Dog for the Thick August 1, 2005

by Terry Doe (Author)
Top Customer Reviews
5.0 out of 5 stars
Fabulous book for anyone with a Bull Terrier or anyone with a sense of humor!
I own a Bull Terrier who’s behavior is strikingly similar to Morris (The Guide Dog for the Thick.) But you don’t need a Bull Terrier to love this book-Funniest thing I have read in a long time, and wonderful in the way the author describes his deep affection for a Bull Terrier that is not for beginners. If you have a dog, thought about getting a dog or love to laugh – buy this book.

Laughed from cover to cover
Anyone who is owned by a dog, especially a Bull Terrier, will love this book. Terry Doe eloquently describes the highs and lows of living with a bully who has no desire to please anyone but himself, with hilarious consequences.
5.0 out of 5 stars
You will laugh!!!!
I own a Bull Terrier and was told by fellow owners that this book was a must have. They were right. I love this book and I love Morris. The stories are short so you can read them at your leisure. Mr. Doe and Morris live in England, so some of the language may be unfamiliar, but you will get the drift. There is no dog like a Bull Terrier and Morris absolutely proves this.

6: Daisy Knows Best Hardcover – February 1, 1999

by Lisa Kopper (Author)
This is the third picture-book story about the escapades of bull terrier Daisy, now a mom with three darling bully pups. Toddlers will delight in the naughty lessons Daisy teaches her pups–and the family’s human baby, who joins in with the other little ones. Kopper’s sweet, winsome illustrations are full of mischief and fun. Full-color illustrations.
Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
In this irresistible picture book, just a few words per page describe Daisy, a charming pooch who’s a perfect role model for her three pudgy puppies and the chubby human baby who shares a home with them. The text on each spread is a study in subtlety. “Daisy teaches Delores how to set the table./ Baby learns, too” reads the caption for a depiction of the mother dog pulling down a laden tablecloth on the left, while the right side shows Baby wreaking havoc on a place setting. Baby even gleefully mimics Daisy’s example of relieving herself on a sheet of newspaper. But when Daisy teaches her canine and human charges how to “fold the laundry” by strewing it around the backyard, Mommy steps in to provide her own style of pedagogy: “Now everyone learns to have a bath…/ because mommies know best of all.” Kopper’s (Daisy Is a Mommy) neatly framed illustrations are as winning and economical as her text. Daisy, with her long snout, tiny soulful eyes and squooshy postnatal body, is the epitome of doggy maternal love and duty. And the puppies and Baby’s physical resemblance to each other is wonderfully comic. Ages 2-4.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1-The star of Daisy Thinks She’s a Baby (Knopf, 1994) and Daisy Is a Mommy (Viking, 1997) is back. In this new adventure, the bullterrier instructs her three puppies and the baby of the house in a multitude of tasks from opening the mail and setting the table to digging in the garden and cleaning up the garbage. Preschoolers will laugh at the lessons Daisy teaches the youngsters and their often messy results. The story reads aloud well, and the text is simple and repetitive enough for beginning readers. The soft, pencil illustrations reflect the lively humor and chaotic events described in the narrative. Daisy’s many fans will be happy to see her back in action.

4: Winston … the dog who changed my life Kindle Edition

by Hilmar Klute (Author)
Hilmar Klute tells the touching story of how he unexpectedly became a bully owner the day his wife came home with Winston, an English Bull Terrier puppy she finds abandoned in a city cemetery.
The new arrival in Hilmar’s life is soon peeing on his parquet floor and chewing his glasses, cushions, telephone cable – and pretty much everything in sight! Winston wrecks the apartment and keeps Hilmar awake at night, but the dog also opens up a new world to Hilmar; of which he was previously blissfully unaware.
Without a clue about how to deal with a puppy, Hilmar tries to make some sense of the unfamiliar territory of the dog park, where people seem to think of themselves more as members of a pack than of society. He soon finds himself studying the dog owners themselves, and casting a critical eye over the services of the professional ‘dog whisperer.’
Hilmar’s attempts to return his world to normal disclose some surprising truths about the relationship between man and dog, and this charming and irreverent book has much to tell us about the weaknesses of both species, and ultimately their strengths, too.

2: A Dog Named Jimmy Hardcover – September 29, 2015

by Rafael Mantesso (Author)
100 new and classic images of popular Instagram celebrity Jimmy Choo the Bull Terrier
On Rafael Mantesso’s thirtieth birthday, his wife left him. She took their cookware, their furniture, their photos, their decorations. She left Rafael alone in an empty all-white apartment. The only thing she didn’t take was their bull terrier, whom she’d named after her favorite shoe designer: Jimmy Choo.
With only Jimmy for company, Rafael found inspiration in his blank walls and his best friend and started snapping photos of Jimmy Choo as he trotted and cavorted around the house in glee. Then, when Jimmy collapsed in happy exhaustion next to the white wall, on a whim Rafael grabbed a marker and drew a new world around his ginger-eared pup. Suddenly, Rafael felt his long-dormant inspiration—for drawing, for art, for life—returning.
The result? Hundreds of charming and cheeky images chronicling the owner and dog’s relationship and adventures, including poses in a Star Wars stormtrooper helmet, passed out with liquor bottles, and as the shark in Jaws. Mantesso’s Instagram feed quickly garnered fans from all over the world and caught the attention of major media outlets like Today, The Huffington Post, USA Today, and the Daily Mail, as well as Jimmy’s namesake, the luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo Ltd.
Now, Mantesso presents a definitive selection of new and classic images of Jimmy and includes the backstory of how the two became such great collaborators. As heartwarming as it is hilarious, A Dog Named Jimmy will delight animal lovers everywhere.

8: Chalk & Cheese Hardcover – October 21, 2008

by Tim Warnes (Author, Illustrator)
“From the illustrator of Rise and Shine and Jesus Loves Me comes the tale of a limitless friendship between a New York City dog and an English country mouse.”
Cheese, the garrulous, hyperbolic English country mouse, and Chalk the dog, who is his long-suffering New York tour guide, are introduced through their postcard correspondence that cleverly depicts their dissimilarities.

Chalk, a white dog, lives in N.Y.C., and pen-pal Cheese, an English mouse, comes to visit.

Fabulous book for anyone with a dog or anyone with a sense of humor!
I own a Bull Terrier who’s behavior is strikingly similar to Morris (The Guide Dog for the Thick.) But you don’t need a Bull Terrier to love this book-Funniest thing I have read in a long time, and wonderful in the way the author describes his deep affection for a dog that is not for beginners. If you have a dog, thought about getting a dog or love to laugh – buy this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars
Laughed from cover to cover
Anyone who is owned by a dog, especially a Bull Terrier, will love this book. Terry Doe eloquently describes the highs and lows of living with a creature who has no desire to please anyone but himself, with hilarious consequences.

This is the third picture-book story about the escapades of bull terrier Daisy, now a mom with three darling pups.
Ages 2-4.

Hilmar Klute tells the touching story of how he unexpectedly became a dog owner the day his wife came home with Winston, an English Bull Terrier puppy she finds abandoned in a city cemetery.

“An enchanting story …” – Graham Ball, The Daily Express
“… all in all, a delightful book that would make a lovely present …” – Dog Training Weekly

Bull Terrier: Bully Love – The Story of Layla & Alfie

Bull Terrier: The Story of Layla and Alfie – Best Friends Forever

bully and little girl

I first met Džiuginta Inga Šiušaite, or Inga as she is affectionately known, through Facebook.I try to maintain a strong presence in the online Bull Terrier community and one day a message popped up from my friend Karen Yateman (another huge bully fan) saying she’d like to introduce me to a lady called Inga.
A lady with a fascinating bully story that I, being a writer, might be interested in.

So I became friends with Džiuginta and her amazing little daughter Layla and their wonderful *bully pet Alfie and she does have a wonderful story!

(*And two cats called Mura and Stella but more about them later)
Originally from Lithuania, Inga suffered terrible burns to both legs six years ago when she kicked a stray firework away from her young son.
These heroics came at a high cost, her trousers burst into flames as what appeared to be an unlit rocket ignited when she touched it.

The flames were quickly doused and Inga was rushed to hospital but, many operations and skin grafts later, the left leg is still unhealed.

Inga sent me a photo and I can honestly say it looks a real mess, I was shocked. The treatment has now been reduced to painkillers until the muscles grow back in preparation for another operation.

In a house with several children and pets, everybody has to muck in and help or, as Inga puts it, “Layla doesn’t know how to do many things for herself yet, she’s only three, but she already knows how to put mummy’s bandages on.”

I asked the question I always ask when I talk to a ‘Bully Mummy’, Why a bull terrier? Why that particular breed?

It turns out that both mummy Inga and a little Layla, then only fifteen months old were scared of them. In fact, toddler Layla was nervous around all dogs and Inga literally thought they were “child killing machines” – such was her opinion as informed by the British media.

One day, one of Inga’s friends told her he knew someone with puppies for sale and showed her a photo of one of them on his mobile phone.

Inga made a quick decision, although afraid of that breed, she had recently also heard another side to the story, another side of the coin: wonderful tales of how caring, loyal, protective and gentle bull terriers were around small children.

Impulsively, she made an off the cuff decision there and then and said yes.

So, on her behalf, the man picked up the bull terrier puppy for her and brought him home.

They named their six-month-old bully puppy…Alfie, and a legendary friendship was born!!..

bull terrier and baby

Young Alfie needed a lot of training, as many of you know only too well, a bully pup is a bouncy, energetic, not-so-little whirlwind!

A bond was formed immediately, in fact much more than a bond as Inga tells me Layla and bull terrier Alfie have what could be described as a telepathic connection.

bull terriers and children

Bull terrier Alfie rarely leaves Layla’s side at all when she isn’t at nursery and when she is he either tries to spend the day in her room, pining, or, when forced to spend time with the rest of the family, he keeps sneaking back to bring out a toy or blanket of hers to cuddle or snuggle up on.

When Layla was poorly a few weeks ago and had to take time off school, bull terrier Alfie stayed by her side the entire time, watching over her and refusing to eat or drink until his little patient began to feel better.

This incredible degree of concern is usual when Layla is sick and has happened ever since she was a baby.

Bull Terrier safe with children

Mummy Inga also explained how Layla doesn’t need to speak to Alfie out loud any more, a mere flick, a hand gesture or a toss of the head and he knows exactly where she wants him to go and what she wants him to do.

The troublesome twosome have had to stop taking baths together due to a few (major) flooding incidents and now Alfie sits patiently on the mat at bathtime, with Layla’s towel around his neck, keeping it warm for when she gets out.

Bull Terrier puppy cute

Alfie is so overprotective that new visitors and even immediate family have to be careful. A recent visit from an Uncle caused no end of distress to Alfie when he arrived and exuburantly twirled Layla around before smothering her in hugs and kisses.

Even mummy and daddy have to be careful not to appear to play too roughly when tickling and bull terrier Alfie muscles in on ANY unauthorised cuddling!

bully puppy sleeping

It isn’t all fun and games though for the wonderfully gentle bully, he also shares his family with two cats who apparently, sometimes BEAT POOR ALFIE UP!

“That’s right”, says Inga “They’ve slapped him on the nose so many times now that when they help themselves to his water or his gravy he just sits quietly letting them. If he gets any closer a hiss from Mura or Stella soon sends him scurrying off to hide behind Layla.”

bull terrier and cats

You may also be wondering what Layla and Alfie think of our gift to them, the new 2016 edition of Milo & Ze. I asked Inga if she herself liked it.

“I haven’t read it! Layla and Alfie won’t let me near it! She takes it every day in her bag to nursery and reads it to all the other children and then when she comes home she reads it only to Alfie.”

Fortunately when we talked Layla and Alfie were playing noisily in the background and I managed to ask Layla quickly what she thought.

“Do you like your bull terrier book, Milo & Ze?” I asked, nervously.

“Yes”, she whispered “it’s our favourite bull terrier book.”

Alfie barked approvingly and then I heard…
“Oh no, now he’s getting in the pram, Layla stop him! Alfie, ALFIE!!!”
