“Oliver.” Her hands fly to cup her cheeks. “You are my dearest friend, so I will speak plainly. I do not feel we are compatible.”
My stomach tightens as if drop-kicked. I swallow. “I see.”
Her cheeks are glowing scarlet and she raises her hands. “You are all goodness; please do not look that way. I admire, respect, and even love you after a fashion, but…I believe the life you want is traditional. My name and that word in a sentence constitute an oxymoron.” The crimson deepens. “I don’t wish to lose you as my dear friend and confidant.”
“Him?” I jerk my thumb at the window, toward the neighboring cottage. “Do you see him like a lover? Can you not see through his fancy speech and false attentions, Bella?”
“Do not call me that.”
My cheeks heat, rage ready to bubble over. “He is a rogue. You are inexperienced with men. He will take your maidenhead. I fear that he will use you and leave you ruined and alone. Like that episode at the theater last year.”
Her face drains of color and her hand shoots out to the sofa, seeming to steady her.
The gesture is so utterly feminine it also enrages me. She is never feminine. But he. He makes her feminine!
“That was a huge misunderstanding, Oliver.” But she is clearly unnerved. Her hands now tremble at her sides. She shakes her head. “You don’t know him.”
“And you do? It’s been years since you’ve bloody seen him. How many girls do you image he bedded in your absence?
“Stop it. Stop it right now, I say. I won’t have you speak to me such.”
“Arabella, I do not care if I have children.”
She freezes, as if the thought iced her veins.
I bet she didn’t think I knew her so well and recalled that singular conversation, over a year prior, when she confessed to thinking she not was capable, lacked the empathy necessary to mother a child.
“W-what do you mean?”
“I mean, there are few men, save those gents who are near-ancient, who would be willing to take just you. As you are, and for all you are. They all want families, heirs. None of that matters to me, if I could just have you.” My chest heaves. “Admit it. Had he not appeared, you would’ve taken me.”
Her eyes say it all.
I am right. “Admit it!”
Her chest is heaving. “Stop this instant. Children aside, what would you have me do? Marry you and keep your house? How would you feel about me going off, every other month, to search for antiquities with a horde of men?”
My guts clench. She’s right. I am a jealous man. “I would be fine with it.”
“Liar.”
“Fine! I would hate it. Probably forbid it.”
Her eyes and face darken like a squall making landfall. “Precisely.” She strides to the door. “I cannot change who I am. And I am a woman who needs constant mental stimulation to feel alive. And keeping your home and being your wife would suffocate me.”
“There is more to life than mental stimulation, Arabella. But you shall find that out. I only hope it’s after there is a ring on that finger. “
Her faces twitches, her mouth pulls open in a scowl.
“Go, Mr. Herald.!”
