The newsletter! (subtitled "Better late than never")
After a lot of wasted energy getting through technical difficulties, my newsletter is finally done. I'm posting it below for anyone not subscribed to it.
Dear Reader,
Apologies for getting this newsletter out so late; the dreaded 'technical difficulties' snared me just as my kids started a new school year.
After a long spell with no new books out, I have not just a new book, but a whole new series to announce! September is the official release date of One Night in London, the first in The Truth About the Duke trilogy.
After three suspense stories filled with spies and derring-do, I took a turn back toward a family drama. These are always a big undertaking; it's like adopting a whole new family who will live with you for two years or more, inside your head, with all their quirks and charms. And I gave this family a serious problem to solve: on his deathbed, the Duke of Durham begs his sons' forgiveness for some terrible crime... a clandestine, possibly illegal marriage when the duke was a wild young man, years before he inherited his title. The marriage was never annulled and there was no divorce, meaning the duke's second marriage, to the mother of his sons, might not be valid. And his sons might not be legitimate. And that would disinherit all three of them. And worst of all, someone has discovered this skeleton in the ducal closet, and begun sending blackmail letters to the duke threatening to expose the whole scandal...
One Night in London is the story of the middle son, dutiful, responsible Edward. Edward is furious at his father for not telling them about this marriage, and for keeping it secret for so long, even after the blackmail letters. His response is a swift, determined legal one: Edward hires the best lawyer in London to see that he and his brothers aren't cut out. Unfortunately, the lawyer he hires is the same man Francesca, Lady Gordon, has just hired to solve her problem. Francesca's orphaned niece has been stolen away by a cruel stepmother, and she's determined to get custody of the child...until Edward steals her attorney. She confronts him. He's drawn to her--but determined to resist. If only she didn't feel the same way about him.
The upside of going so long without a book out is that the whole series is on an accelerated schedule. Blame it on Bath will be out in March 2012, the story of the youngest son, Gerard. And the final book, tentatively titled The Way to a Duke's Heart, will be released in September 2012, the story of Charlie, the eldest son--and possible duke?
For those who like to start at the very beginning, don't miss I Love the Earl, a novella set some forty years earlier. It tells the story of Margaret de Lacey, unmarried until the age of thirty, when her older brother unexpectedly inherits the dukedom of Durham and makes her an heiress. Naturally, most of the men who approach her are interested in the money. Naturally, Margaret sees right through them, even losing her temper one night and telling off one destitute earl before he can even introduce himself. Naturally, Rhys, Earl of Dowling, finds this exhilarating and interesting, and before long he's determined to win Margaret's heart as well as her hand. They are one of my favorite couples, and I hope you enjoy their romance!
I'm a little late to embrace Facebook, but now I've come to like hanging out there, chatting with readers. If you're on Facebook, I hope you'll find me there for random tidbits from my books, idle musing, and the occasional random giveaway.
Wishing you a fall season filled with many great books,
Caroline
