I used to think that there must be some magical trick for defeating writer's block that I just didn't know, but at least for me, what it comes down to is perseverance. I write when I'm inspired, but I also write when I don't feel like writing. Sometimes I skip sections or use brackets to show where I need to add something later.

I also realized, though, that while I love to write and I'm very motivated, writing isn't everything. The best way to write adventures and to create interesting characters is to live adventures and to meet interesting people. If I have days when I am totally blocked, one of the best cures is time spent away from my book with friends or family. It's okay to take breaks! (less)

Emily Dickinson
“One need not be a chamber to be haunted,
One need not be a house;
The brain has corridors surpassing
Material place.

Far safer, of a midnight meeting
External ghost,
Than an interior confronting
That whiter host.

Far safer through an Abbey gallop,
The stones achase,
Than, moonless, one's own self encounter
In lonesome place.

Ourself, behind ourself concealed,
Should startle most;
Assassin, hid in our apartment,
Be horror's least.

The prudent carries a revolver,
He bolts the door,
O'erlooking a superior spectre
More near.”
Emily Dickinson, The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson
