There are also those who are immortal. And the promise of immortality might drive some to do anything to have their chance to live forever.

Larkspur Lee is a compelling protagonist. She’s got a past, and the early hints suggest secrets she wants to keep buried as she builds her new life in Europe, far from where she grew up in California. (Lee’s family comes from Korea.) She’s distanced from her mother and grandmother and determined to make a name for herself. To do that, she’s devoted herself to her studies as Université Meurdrac.

Unlike her peers, she doesn’t have a heritage that secures her a place of prestige and she doesn’t have much money. She engages in illegal activities to stay afloat while working to be the best in her class.

When the opportunity arises to become an apprentice to one of the few who have immortality, Lark is determined to secure the spot. Things go horribly wrong, and the immortal is murdered.

The murder provides the opening for someone from Lark’s past to arrive and she soon finds herself caught between the woman investigating the murder (who has a mysterious past of her own), the man she ran from in California, and her peers.

What stood out for me in Mothsblood was how unique Lark is as a protagonist. So many stories create heroes. While I absolutely rooted for Lark along the way, she was honest with herself, that she was no hero. She was selfish and ambitious and she used people to further her agenda as needed. But those flaws also set the stage for a lot of growth, and that made her a very interesting, memorable protagonist.

The author does a great job of weaving in information about the past without slowing the plot in the present, and there are plenty of developments that keep the story from being predictable. I was wrong about some things I guessed at, but every reveal made sense and was earned through foreshadowing and hints along the way.

Some of the other elements in this book include found family and real friendships. I love romantasy books. I’m not quite sure this qualifies as romantasy (although it has a relationship arc in it), and I don’t know if there are plans to make this a series, so I’m viewing it as a standalone at this time. However you classify it, for me, Mothsblood felt fresh and compelling and is a memorable story. And since Lark is conditioned by necessity to focus on survival, her journey is inspirational.

Notes For The Audience:

This story is ideal for those who enjoy suspense, murder mysteries, the mounting sense of dread of horror, and stories set against an academic landscape. Mothsblood leans into dark fantasy territory.

What stood out for me in Wolftamer was that Rapier didn’t coast. Soulgazer felt fresh and unique for many reasons, including the lore, some unique inventions (that I won’t spoil in case you haven’t read it) and the progression of the relationship. Saoirse isn’t your conventional hero who’s always bold and brave and sure of herself, but she is a hero. She’s fought for herself and her people. Faolan loves to be the center of attention, to see himself as larger than life, and it isn’t easy for him to take a step back when someone else shines brighter.

At the start of Wolftamer, both Saoirse and Faolan are struggling. Now, while I didn’t want Faolan to struggle with Saoirse’s importance and I wanted him to willingly give up his life at sea to be with her, I appreciate the fact that he felt torn between his old and new lives. It was realistic and it also gave him an opportunity to grow throughout the story.

There are many characters with their own agendas and parsing out who to trust and how to deal with those with ill intent presented many challenges and obstacles throughout, which kept me guessing about how things would be resolved.

The story takes us to some unexpected places, and this was great. It paid off by revealing more about key characters and helped us understand them. I’m avoiding specifics to avoid any potential spoilers, but I really enjoyed the various settings throughout the story.

To avoid spoilers, I won’t say why, but Rapier reduced me to tears at points. At points, I felt frustrated, furious, afraid, and gutted. But after going through all of that, Rapier delivered an immensely satisfying ending.

For me, Wolftamer got better with every page. It delivered a story that Faolan could be proud of because, despite many challenges, heroes fought and risked everything to thwart the bad guys and protect their people.

The ending was perfection. I’m sad to say farewell to Saoirse and Faelon and their crew, but I’ve loved this journey, and with Rapier’s obvious skill at developing complex characters and narratives, I’m eager to see what she has in store for us next.

This story is ideal for people who love epic fantasy stories with a romance that’s central to the plot.

In a harsh world without room for nuance or forgiveness, Yeeran is exiled, an event that serves as a catalyst for the story and sees her thrown into a world that shouldn’t exist.

Faebound moves at a steady pace without sacrificing character development or worldbuilding.
One of the things the story made me think about was what it would be like to live in a world without forgiveness or correction. (Some days on social media, it feels like we’re there.)

What stood out for me in Faebound were themes around forgiveness; forgiving yourself and forgiving others. There’s also a question of loyalty, and it’s a motivating factor that influences the climax of the book and sets things up for book two. It can be a hard thing to let go of loyalty if you’ve been committed to someone for a long time, and I am curious about how this will play out in book two and how allegiances may change.

It features elves and humans, and because of old (and current) conflicts between them, it deals with biases and the way that events are distorted as they’re retold, and how the retellings become the authoritative version of events people believe, while the truth is either obliterated or diluted. This adds to the internal journey of the characters, because they must confront their beliefs and try to reconcile them with new facts.

If you like romance, there’s plenty of smoldering tension. I found the romantic subplots intriguing, as all relationships have complications that should make things interesting in Cursebound.

I liked the characters, am invested in their journey, and already have a copy of Cursebound and a copy of Earthbound pre-ordered.

I was drawn into Douglas’s story and character. He has a heightened sense of responsibility and, in an era when many try to absolve themselves of things they’ve done, he takes ownership even when he learns the truth about different situations that arise. He’s as much a victim as anyone, but he doesn’t wear it like a shield.

He does, however, wish people believed in him. And in some ways, his journey is about learning to believe in himself and let those who do believe in him be there for him.

There’s a lot of heartbreak within this story because of Douglas’s past and some decisions he makes throughout. However, there’s also a lot of hope, and it had me choked up. Whenever a book gets a strong emotional response from me, it’s a sign it had me fully immersed and that I connected with the characters and felt for them. All of that is true with this book.

The story moves at a steady pace, it has ongoing revelations that shifted my perspective and raised or altered the stakes as the story progressed. It definitely had some surprises, but Jackson has expertly hinted at things in a way that keeps you from predicting all the developments but ensuring they feel justified when they arise.

What stood out for me in The Forest Demands Its Due was how much Douglas loved and respected his mother. How committed he was to doing what he believed was right. How much he didn’t want others to suffer because of his choices.

The relationship between Douglas and Everett was a highlight. Sometimes, when people face life and death situations, they acquire a clarity that helps them cut through all the waffling that often happens in relationships, and I think that’s a factor here. It might feel like the relationship moves fast, but it runs deep, because of the stakes and the level of transparency that evolves between them.

“Humans are social creatures. We yearn to belong, to be seen and accepted. We generally won’t do anything that goes against that.”

What stood out for me in Misery’s Wife was the setting. Misery’s Wife is cli-fi (climate fiction), set in a future world where mankind struggles to survive and is at the mercy of nature, with only stories remaining about technology and mankind’s prior achievements. The conflict between the realms of nature (the woods and the ocean) is an integral part of the story, so the setting is more than just window dressing. It’s essential.

Misery’s Wife is very much a quest-style story, with clear objectives and clear stakes, although it has some excellent surprises along the way.

Tierney utilizes a repeating structure, which effectively frames expectations as the story progresses, then provides points where the story twists.

One of the interesting elements, for me, was seeing the world through the eyes of a sibling who’s much younger. Elixane’s experience with her parents is much different than the experience her older sisters had, and I think it’s something that much younger children will find relatable. It added a layer to Elixane’s character, because of her incredible devotion to sisters who were barely more than a memory.

For me, Elixane is memorable. The courage Elixane exhibits in being her true self and not succumbing to pressures to conform or fit in with her world is what carries her through her quest, and enables her to find solutions to the challenges she faces.

I also loved Luck and Jinx. The two provided an interesting way to think about luck and they both enhanced the story.

For me, Misery’s Wife is cozy post-apocalyptic. There’s something comforting in the subtext and repeating story structure that assures you of an eventual happy resolution, and I had full confidence in Elixane and her ability to fulfill her quest. Although civilization (as we know it) has collapsed and the world is a difficult place in this cli-fi retelling, there’s an undercurrent of hope. I also appreciated little nuggets of truth woven throughout, such as addressing long-standing conflicts that people inherited, and learning how to let conflict go and embrace an unfamiliar peace.

This story is ideal for people who love retellings, people interested in cli-fi, and people who appreciate trans representation in fiction.

The premise is intriguing: someone who can read the last thoughts of the dead needs to solve a murder to prove he didn’t commit it, or he’ll be executed. I love fantasy and crime fiction, and this book promised a combination of those genre elements. It also had a believable reason for an amateur sleuth to take on a murder investigation, and with his life on the line, Irody Hasp is quite motivated to solve this case.

Mortedant’s Peril delivered a perfect blend of fantasy and mystery. Irody Hasp is not your most easy-to-love protagonist, and the world he lives in is complex and, at times, frustrating. It feels like everything is against him. At the same time, Hasp has retained some of the attitudes he was raised with. Classism is rife in Hasp’s world, and one of the questions I had while reading was whether his attitude towards people on the lower levels—and his bodyguard, who is a different species—would change.

The story contains plenty of unexpected developments. Throughout the investigation, Hasp is forced far outside his comfort zone, into places he’s never been. He’s forced to confront a lot of truths learned about his world, and he’s forced to confront truths about himself, including his assumptions and biases. Ultimately, the story delivers a solid growth arc for Hasp as well as a clear resolution to his apprentice’s murder.

While Hasp is a great protagonist, some of the characters he meets along the way are equally colorful and fun. And unpredictable. Even when you think he’s finally in a position to be helped, you find out all is not as it seems. I won’t say more because I want to avoid spoilers, but I will say that I appreciate how new revelations changed motivations.

Since I do love mysteries, I was trying to work out the solution as I read. While some things seemed clear, I did not work everything out. I love it when I’m surprised, and when I can look back and see all the little hints that I didn’t connect while I focused on other elements of the mystery. In that respect, Barker’s handling of the investigation is masterful. He plays fair, and still surprises.

Like all great series, it leaves us without perfect resolution. Yes, the murder is solved, but the world Hasp lives in is largely unchanged. Hasp still has enemies and struggles and now knows just how fragile his world is, and it will be very interesting to see how he progresses in future books.

Mortedant’s Peril does have a found family, and that was a great element of the story. It was good seeing Hasp develop connections and affection for others.

For me, Mortedant’s Peril was an immersive read. I was completely pulled into Hasp’s world and his dilemma and I can’t wait to return to Hasp’s world. I found Hasp, and his world, to be memorable. It’s one of my favorite reads so far this year.

Notes For The Audience:

This story is ideal for people who love cross-genre stories. Mortedant’s Peril has an active murder investigation that forms the backbone of the story but it is clearly anchored in a fantasy world, where some have distinct abilities. I wouldn’t classify the tone as full noir, but it definitely leans to the darker side of the spectrum vs. the cozy side. Hasp is an amateur sleuth, but his life is on the line, so he is determined.

I do think that those who love fantasy more than mysteries can still fully appreciate this story, particularly if you enjoy protagonists who aren’t seasoned investigators and muddle their way through mistakes while learning how to move past assumptions to find the truth.

Montes has crafted a captivating story that has appeal for fans of crime and horror. The Secret Dinner unfolds at a rapidly escalating pace, which will appeal to readers who like thrillers. I wouldn’t call it slow to start, but by the end of the book, the pace is blistering… I had to know what happened. It was like watching a car crash; I couldn’t look away and had to know what happened.

One thing that appealed to me when I was reading was that the four friends didn’t intend to become criminals. They were students. This is a story that many can relate to because these were relatively normal guys doing what thousands of people do each year; moving away from home and going to college or training for their intended careers. This is a case of one bad decision leading to another, and Montes takes enough time to lay a foundation for the events that unfold and get us invested in the characters and their dilemma. I really appreciated the fact that I cared about these characters, and Montes developed their arcs in a way that contributed to the central dilemma they faced. While the core of the story focuses on their current situation, Montes does weave in details about the four friends and their history. These details established them as individuals and, in some cases, provided motivation for the choices they made as the story progressed. How each of the four friends responded was true to their character. There was never a moment when I thought a character was acting in service of the plot instead of being true to themselves.

Notes For The Audience:

This story is ideal for people who love suspense and tension and life-or-death stakes. It is bloody and graphic and doesn’t shy away from the unsavory aspects of these secret dinners. It is perfect for anyone who loves a gritty crime story that overlaps with elements of horror while delivering memorable characters I was rooting for.
