As an avid reader of science fiction, the springboard for Stan's writing career began when he won a writing award for a science fiction short story contest for Read Magazine when he was 12 years old. He never stopped writing after that. For two and a half decades before retirement, he was s been an elementary teacher. He also served nationally as an educational consultant for private schools, and is a certified Systemic and Family Constellation facilitator. He lives with his wife and their Siamese cat in a split-level suburban house along the Front Range of Colorado's Rocky Mountains.

It's channeling. Which is ok. Just...not really writing in my opinion. I believe that writing's an art, and it has to be developed. Like any skill, if you practice it, you'll get better. Perhaps take a class. Or talk to a writer. Twitter for a writer's group. Ask a teacher for kick-in-the-pants ideas. Or, if you still think you have something called writer's block, you could even go get therapy. Really. Avoidance of writing by empowering inspiration to exclude you by labeling it as a block leaves little room for authorship and writing. There are thousands of writing exercises to stimulate a writer's creativity--even putting prepositional phrases in order does it for me! I carry a booklet everywhere I go. I do speed-characterizations of interesting people I meet. If you're truly stuck, just Google a list of fun writing activities--and actually try them. Or go fishing. Literally. Writing is generating ideas from personal life experiences, so enriching one's perspective by sitting in nature is not only good for your descriptive writing, it's great for you physically. You'll sleep better, have a better appetite, and who knows what those elementals will inspire in you.(less)

Stan Sudan answered Goodreads's question: Stan Sudan
Once upon a time in my distant youth, I was relaxing in the cool, sun-dappled shade of a gigantic, live-oak tree, eating a delectable, maple-sugar-coated, sweet-cheese-filled pastry, savoring each and every eye-rolling-into-the-back-of-my-head bite. See Full Answer

“Turn and face the Light, and all you see is Brightness. Turn and face Shadow, and all of Life will appear before you.”
Stan Sudan, Sisters of Light

“The secret of wisdom is to be overly curious, like a cat--to take the time to look closely, to use all your senses to see and to touch and to taste and to smell and to hear, and to die because you were overly curious. To keep on wondering...about the afterlife. That is our only mission. Only one. If we don’t wonder, then we will never, ever be curious. Then, if like the cat, you wondered too far...you simply no longer will have to ever wonder again. Your mission will be fulfilled. All because of curiosity.

--from The Wise-ass Man who butchered Eve Merriam’s wisdom...and Her Secret”

“When the filly, the maiden, the boy and the warrior are ready to take up their Destinies, each will know it. The filly will become a mare, the maiden a woman, the boy a man. The Warrior, however, will pick up a stick and walk from his mother, his people, and his land, and never once remove his eyes from the true red road that lies beneath his feet. And yet, he will never know that he is on his Path. (From Brothers of Light)”

“As far as I’m concerned, story is everything. It is why we get up in the morning and how we choose who to take to bed at night. Story is the thread that weaves together the very fabric of reality.”
Jay Norry, Stumbling Backasswards Into the Light

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches

“When you give me art—give me something that reaches inside of my core and twists, taking the very breath that sustains me away.
Give me something that wakens me from my lethargy.
Give me something that causes me to ponder and question all that I have come to know; due to my circumstances that I have been allotted in this life.
Give me something that causes me to question my pride and arrogance of knowing that I am right in my thoughts, beliefs and perceptions.
Shake me: as if you had grabbed me and pushed me against the wall—shattering all of my preconceived notions; causing me to break out of the box that I have put others in.
Give me something that scraped over the scar tissue of wounds that you carry within, opening them afresh and causing you pain—real core pain—pain that you had pushed down; pain that now resides in your closet of skeletons.
When you give me art, give me you, or give me nothing at all…
