Payal Dhar (she/they) has been writing stories since they were seven years old. Unfortunately, no one will ever know what was in them because they dog ate everything. They write on a computer these days, and hopes they’ll never cross paths with a Pting.

In her day job, which she does at night because she hates mornings, she is a freelance journalist on science, technology and society. She also writes books for middle-grade and young-adult readers.

If you’d like to get in touch, especially to recommend good books, you can do so at their website, payaldhar.com.

The decision to feature the subject of suicide in a children's book wasn't an easy one, and to do it without inciting pity for Viru or trivializing him weighed more on my mind than anything else.(less)

I've got some of my best ideas in dreams -- I keep a pen and notebook next to my bed, because if I don't write them immediately, I'll forget my morning. But inspiration is a very small part of writing. It's mostly a lot of hard work, and just like when you play a sport or sing or dance, the more you practise, the better you get at it. It's easy to forget that sometimes, and you sit around feeling sorry for yourself, waiting for inspiration to strike. What you actually need to do is chase it determinedly with a big net.(less)

Learning to suck, learning to live

Earlier this year, for the first time in my life, I dipped my toes into baking seriously. I bought an oven, stocked up on dark cooking chocolate (for what is cake without chocolate?), researched recipes, measured my dishes, and rolled up my sleeves. The first few attempts ranged from the ordinary to outright disasters. (Those indestructible silicone baking moulds? They are not so indestructible af

3.5 stars. This was a terrifying and gripping book, but I was overall disappointed at the pace. I don't mean it got boring, but was definitely a page-turner, but I expected things to happen, and they didn't really, at least not towards the very end. ...more

3.5 stars. This was a very cool fantasy novel featuring body-swapping humans, making gender absolutely meaningless, because you can jump into whichever body you want. I very much enjoyed the flip-flop of "good"/"bad" sides, which kept you on your toe ...more

3.5 stars for this delightful romp of a whodunit, and a fervent hope that this will be series. I'm taking away a star for the slow beginning. The humour was delectable most of the time, but sometimes grating—there is such a curse as too much of a goo ...more

This utterly beautiful novel is sci-fi/spec-fic set across three timelines, in the 20th, 21st and 25th centuries. A great example of character-based storytelling as well. It lagged a bit in the middle, and was a bit confusing in parts, but the writin ...more

KS Selvakumar Menaka of Plus Minus 'n' More would like to feature you on the site's F-page. If you are OK with it, I'll ask her to contact you.

Payal For a light read, There's a Ghost in My PC; for some fantasy, you might try Satin: A Stitch in Time (but be warned there isn't a second part yet). As for the Shadow in Eternity books, the updated ebooks will be available soon, so I'd recommend you wait. :-)

KS Selvakumar Which of your books do you recommend that I read next?
You could suggest a list with order of preference too.
