I think for me, writing has always felt like a super-intense, extra-immersive form of reading. You get to be amazing people and do amazing things, and all while sitting in a poky writing room in a quiet Yorkshire village! But then it turned out I really love revising as well - from the nitpicky, edity stuff to drawing great black lines through whole chunks of text when it doesn't do the job I wanted. The satisfaction of that process, the delight at finding the exact right word, or precise bit of concrete historical detail to spark the imagination and make a forgotten world come to life.... it's better than chocolate. Better than crisps. (less)

That usually puts me back in the mood. Failing that, there's a gadget called Write or Die (writeordie.com) that plays awful scratchy violin music at you if you stop typing.
I am lucky though, because I started writing seriously just after having children, and it is a well known fact that no-one in the world is as productive as a mother whose baby has just gone to sleep and knows she will only get 20 minutes at most before it wakes up again. So I've got quite good at writing, even if it's twaddle, rather than letting myself stare at a blank screen. Sometimes what I write is rubbish, of course, but that's fine - I can cut it later. (less)
