“Kelet-Közép-Európa hasonlóképpen utasította el a kommunizmust, mint ahogy a test kilöki magából a beültetett szervet, de ennek okai és következményei nem olyan egyértelműek, mint amilyennek akkor látszottak. Nagy vonalakban három ellenzéki álláspont létezett (ezek talán Lengyelországban határolódtak el a legszembetűnőbben): az első azért ellenezte a kommunizmust, mert az ellentétes a nemzeti és vallási örökséggel, a második azért, mert a szabadság eltipróját látta benne, a harmadik pedig azért, mert nem váltotta be ígéreteit és megreformálhatatlannak bizonyult.
