For the memoir which I plan to publish in May, I was influenced by Patricia Hampl's "A Romantic Education," by Annie Dillard's "An American Childhood," by Mary McCarty's "Memories of a Catholic Childhood," and by C. S. Lewis "Surprised by Joy," and Thomas Merton's "The Seven-Storey Mountain." I prefer memoir more than books of essays, I must say, though I did enjoy E B White's essays a lot!
