The Best Book of 2012--So Far

In 2011, the best book I read was Steve Jobs, that remarkable biography. So far this year, my favorite is Spillover by David Quammen, the science-medical-history-travel nonfiction book that reads like an adventure novel. Quammen even commented on this, noting that "nonfiction could be wondrous and imaginative, shapely and literary — it didn’t just have to be explanatory.” The book has an ominous theme because it is about zoonotic diseases, those that pass back and forth between animals and humans. This is not only the best book I've read this year, but also one of the best I've ever read.

I Sign Books and Speak at Monticello

My talk at Monticello was successful, with about 70 people in attendance and quite a few copies of "The Founding Foodies" sold. The pic of me on this page shows me signing books with good ole Thomas Jefferson looking over my shoulder. It was fun to return to Charlottesville, where I spent 1962-66 getting my BA in English at the University of Virginia. Thanks to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation for sponsoring my visit and giving me a nice honorarium. This happened in August, 2012.
