Simon Edge read philosophy at Cambridge and had a long career as a newspaper journalist and critic. He is the author of five novels, mostly satirical comedies with a historical theme: The Hopkins Conundrum, a ‘tragic comedy’ based on the life of the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins; The Hurtle of Hell, an atheist comedy featuring God as one of the main characters; A Right Royal Face-Off, about the rivalry between the painters Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds, mixed with a satirical modern story; Anyone for Edmund?, a political satire about the discovery of England’s long-lost patron saint; and The End of the World is Flat, described by novelist Jane Harris as ‘Animal Farm for the era of gender lunacy, with jokes’. He lives in Suffolk.

Also sitting waiting to be read – and I'm impatient to start on them – are Elizabeth Is Missing by Emma Healey, and Robert Harris' Archangel. And I recently picked up a copy of The Time Traveler's Wife – I seem to be in a small minority never having read it, so I'll be rectifying that omission.(less)

“replying to Dennster Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire If you knew anything about history, you’d know the world’s leading thinkers have all believed the earth is round since Pythagoras in the 6th century BC. Plato said the earth was a globe. So did Euclid. So did Archimedes and Aristotle 1/... RT 8 L 90 Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire The Greek mathematician Eratosthenes used geometry to calculate the earth’s circumference in about 250BC and got it nearly right. The Romans believed the earth was round. So did St Augustine, the Venerable Bede and Thomas Aquinas 2/... RT 7 L 84 Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire You can disagree with all those learned historical figures if you want, but don’t tell me everyone was a flat-earther before Columbus. That’s a downright lie 3/3 RT 5 L 79 Dennster @true_earth_matters Sorry, Terg, but you don’t know what you’re talking about RT 8 L 118 Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire Actually I have a doctorate in the history of science. What’s your qualification? RT 6 L 89 Dennster blocked Trent Meyer Sally Jenkinson @saljenk07342 STFU Terg RT 0 L 57”

“Globy Dick @GlobyDick OK flat-earther RT 0 L 5 Dennster @true_earth_matters Read a book RT 0 L 43 Globy Dick @GlobyDick After you, mate. Maybe you should start with Copernicus RT 0 L4 Sally Jenkinson @saljenk07342 STFU Terg RT 0 L 21 Sadie @sadie93ozumvjfs Hahahahaha! Copernicus was another white guy RT 0 L 32 Globy Dick @GlobyDick Out of interest, are you black or white yourself? RT 0 L8 Sadie blocked Globy Dick replying to Dennster Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire What makes you think ‘globularism’ is an imperialist project? That’s ahistorical bull RT 1 L 23 Dennster @true_earth_matters Are you serious? Have you ever heard of Christopher Columbus? RT 2 L 54 Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire What does Columbus have to do with anything? RT 0 L 6 Dennster @true_earth_matters Do you Tergs know nothing? He only invented the idea that the earth was round”
Simon Edge, The End of the World is Flat

“Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire No he didn’t. Don’t be ridiculous. Nobody has seriously believed the earth is flat for the last 2,500 years. Not until you lot started drinking the Kool-Aid RT 3 L 41 Dennster @true_earth_matters Please. It’s a documented fact that Columbus had to try and persuade the Council of Salamanca that the earth was round, but they didn’t buy it. And none of his sailors wanted to go on the voyage because they thought he was a globularist nutter RT 9 L 124 Trent Meyer @meyer_the_fire It’s not documented fact. It’s pure fiction. It was made up by the writer Washington Irving in the 1820s to create an origin story for the United States. The Council of Salamanca was never even a thing RT 1 L 27 Dennster @true_earth_matters Washington Irving? Right. Another white guy RT 3 L 46 Mekell King @pointymekell I’m black. It doesn’t upset me if anyone says the earth is round. I’m comfortable with basic facts RT 5 L 64 Dennster @true_earth_matters Have you ever heard of internalised racism? RT 0 L 14 Mekell King @pointymekell Seriously? You’re going there? You, a white dude, are actually calling me, a black woman, racist?? RT 7 L 89 Dennster @true_earth_matters How do you know I’m white? RT 0 L 65 Mekell King @pointymekell You are, though, aren’t you? RT 1 L 75 Dennster blocked Mekell King”
