Writing the Rum Runner's Woman

Some authors call the phenomenon of a continuous uninterrupted flow of thoughts and feelings a stream of consciousness. I call my ability to write paragraph after paragraph and page after page in a frenzied state of non-stop typing automatic writing.

One day as I sat in front of my keyboard a woman began to tell me her story of romance and adventure with a rumrunner during the days of Prohibition in America. I became intrigued with a time in American history that gave birth to men like Al Capone and Elliot Ness. I researched my facts and together with the voice of May Kaney streaming through my head I conjured up a love story set during days of moonshiners, bootleggers, mobsters, and rumrunners.
After a lot of research on the history of Prohibition in America, The Rum Runner’s Woman, was launched into the world.

I would say 30% percent of the novel is inspired, 30% is research, and 40% comes from my imagination.

Was there really a schooner named Black Heart?
I have no evidence that May Kaney or Eric Bolene actually existed. If they did they did not go by those names. But, I know in my bones, there was once a love triangle raging on the high seas. And, I have told Red, May, and Eric’s story to the best of my ability.

All I know is that when someone is so desperate to tell their story they travel through time and space to crash into my awareness I’m compelled to share their words with the world.
