The Righter!
I’m a citer
I’m a fighter
I’m a midday righter
Tryin’ to find balance before the day is done…
*A parody of “The Joker," a song by the Steve Miller Band from their 1973 album, The Joker.
An Indie author, I know I’m not alone in navigating life’s choppy waters while trying to further my writing endeavors. Due to unforeseen hairpin turns and detours, it had taken me approximately 8 years to finish and publish my second novel in the genre of Contemporary, 'An Enlightening Quiche' (eBook – 370 pages).
In January 2018, I began my third Contemporary, 'Aida’s Fishing Ground,' progressing at my own unhurried pace where I left off two weeks ago. That’s right! I haven’t advanced a single word in drafting chapter 6. And, it’s not because I’ve gone fishing!
Indies who are primary caregivers or liaisons know the drill. You drop everything to meet up with your loved one at the ER. You become a citer, fighter, and righter to assure that the patient’s best medical and psychological interests are met. Being an advocate is exhausting and stressful. But, because our heart is in the right place, we prioritize, and everything else goes to hell in a hand basket—as it should.
Yet, during my driving spurts, Keith Lawrence and Obie Smith—two of my characters, made their presence known by channeling dialogue. As I’m a pantser, I store this information for subsequent retrieval when it’s time to summon. I’m not there by a long shot, but it will keep without my writing it down prior to that point. It’s how I roll. If you’ve read my multi-award winning 'An Enlightening Quiche,' I think you’ll concur that I did a damn good job differentiating my fully-fleshed characters, and plotting its twists and turns.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Meanwhile, the week ends on a positive note for health care management. I’ll soon transition to “the midnight writer” and plod/plot my way along Aida’s journey in my office—my fishing ground for reeling in the words to tell my story.

Eva’s Byte #486 – Going the Distance
Often enough, we hit the ground running to go the distance for someone near and dear to us. The same person who used to go the distance for us. In that regard, all else is on hold and you’re missing in action where you don’t need to be.
In retrospect, you marvel at your own strength and stamina to keep going the distance until all criteria is met where you can finally glimpse the light at the end of the tunnel.
In the capacity of a writer, advancement along my brand new contemporary work in progress had taken a proverbial back seat. Nevertheless, the windmills of my mind are still spinning ideas to further the distance along the draft of chapter 1 (475 words thus far).
*May each of us go the distance from start to finish.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #500 – Going the Distance
“You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.” (Bob Marley)
One of the many who goes the distance in the capacity of care-giving, I recently found myself back in the loop of hightailing it to the ER and making follow-up visits to the hospital.
At this particular hospital, going the distance literally starts with pounding the pavement from a parking garage to a building, and then proceeding along a labyrinth of corridors to one’s destination.
On one of those days, I arrived before the official start of visiting hours. I sat in the waiting area at a central location where people in need of medical attention check in. I may have gone the distance, but this elderly woman out-distanced me by a mile:
She inched her way along the drop-off/pick-up lane to a set of doors. When she got out of her SUV, she single-handedly removed a wheelchair from the cargo section. After whipping it in shape, she then proceeded to assist her husband out of the vehicle and into the chair. After wheeling him inside the building, she got back in her vehicle and headed for one of the parking garages.
You know the drill. She had to walk all the way back to the central building. Eventually she’d have to walk all the way back to the parking garage to get her vehicle and join the queue in the transport area to perform another Herculean feat.
That’s an unsung heroine summoning her strength and stamina to go the distance!
In the capacity of a writer, I’ve gone the distance in fine-tuning chapter 6 of my Contemporary work in progress to 1544 words. Due to life’s hairpin turns, I’m slowly getting my mojo back for wending my way through the draft of chapter 7 (243 words thus far).
*May each of us go the extra mile when it’s required of us to do so.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #502 – On the Outside, Looking In
In the aftermath of light snow, on a gloomy morning with a biting chill of 34 degrees, I set out for my last trip in the capacity of a caregiver. Essentially, heading to the end of the road.
In the midst of braking during heavy commuter traffic, I was serenaded by Andy Williams’ “Happy Holidays” on the local twenty-four-hour Christmas station. Diverting my attention to the houses nearby, their illuminated windows indicated creatures were stirring. Perhaps, some sipped a hot cup of coffee while basking inside the warmth of their home.
Hoop-de-do and dickory dock!
I look forward to reclaiming the warmth of hearth and home without the encumbrance of anxiety.
In the capacity of a writer, it's been a slow crawl, but I hope to pick up the pace along the journey of my Contemporary work in progress. Currently, the draft of chapter 7 has progressed to 602 words.
*May each of us find time to enjoy our favorite seasonal activities.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
