Eva’s Byte #235: Curtains—or, so I Thought!

Well, another nice mess I’d gotten myself into!

Not one to shy away from writing about my mechanical ineptitude or lack of tech savvy, it’s easy for me to trip wires. The latest mishap occurred while flying through the air with the greatest of ease on my keyboard trapeze.

In the midst of drafting chapter 36 within my Work in Progress, the metaphorical lights went out. The “view” of my document metamorphosed into read mode, the tool bar disappeared, and editing was not enabled.

A doomsday prepper prepared for life’s uncertainties, such as a computer crash, I am mindful of safeguarding my document by emailing myself copies to two accounts at the end of each writing session. So, undaunted, I downloaded one of the reserve copies, and moved it to the file my novel occupies.

Horrors! A cloned copy in read mode under the same restrictions!

Now panicking, thinking it was curtains for me, I placed a call to my computer tech. Lo and behold, I had to leave a message. Darn! A writer who burns the midnight oil, it’s hard for me to believe there are people who set reasonable limits to their work day.

Like Mr. Magoo, the cartoon character, I stumbled upon the solution purely by accident or Divine Intervention. With nothing to lose, I clicked on the tippity top of the screen in my document.

Voila! Thenceforth, I was able to get the toolbar back, and navigate view mode from there.

I’m back in the saddle, resuming my journey along the arduous trails of a writer.
Necessity is the mother of ingenuity!

Eva’s Byte #467 – Zipper Dee-Doo-Dah!

Why are handbag zipper extenders needed in the first place?

You’d think these high-end designers would have enough pull to add a leather tassel for good measure.

Transferring all of my purse paraphernalia to a brand new spring-shade handbag, sliding the tab from one end to the other to close the deal was—get ready for it—like pulling teeth.

Call it writer’s ingenuity for relying on one’s noggin to pull the zipper out of a jam:

To the rescue, a complimentary Juicy Couture cherries bracelet charm I happened to save. I must say the adapted extender I’ve linked to the zipper opening works like a charm. Not only functional, but aesthetically pleasing.

In the capacity of a writer, I’m zipping along the draft of chapter 54 toward the light at the end of the tunnel (1432 words thus far) of my Contemporary work in progress.

*May each of us stay on track for achieving our creative goals.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #548 – The Ice Tongs

Ice tongs, hitherto never used, come in handy during an uh-oh moment.

These ice tongs have a history rooted in a memoir I’d published on Authors Den, September 28, 2019, “Homespun Goodness.” I sing the praises of Modern Diner, the Pawtucket, Rhode Island restaurant chosen to be the first diner in the nation accepted on the National Register for Historic Places. The “Sterling Streamliner” entailing the diner’s skeletal structure was purportedly manufactured in the late 1930s and 1940s.

At that point in time, before I picked up the tab for the breakfast my mother and I heartily enjoyed, our server presented us with “stainless steel” ice tongs sealed in plastic as a goodwill gesture for our loyal patronage.

For six years, the sealed tongs idled inside a cutlery tray along with other hardly used utensils. Until October 23, 2025, when the detached nozzle of my dental flosser accidentally got swept into the garbage disposal. Ice tongs to the rescue!

In the capacity of a writer progressing along my Contemporary work in progress, I’m drafting chapter 24 (1087 words thus far).

May each of us tap into our resourcefulness when called for.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
