Eva’s Byte #357 – The Ticonderoga
During the latter part of my teaching career in the third-grade trenches, our quintessential writing implement was the yellow, No.2 pencil manufactured by Ticonderoga.
The son of a ship captain, Joseph Dixon, who enjoyed experimenting with the graphite he found on his father’s sailing vessels, eventually invented the first pencil in 1812. There wasn’t a demand for his invention until the Civil War, when soldiers sought a more practical alternative to the quill pen for writing letters home. Dixon then invented a machine capable of producing 132 pencils per minute.
So, what’s my point?
In this day and age of cyber technology, electronic billing and other online transactions have rendered my ballpoint pens virtually useless. While they lie dormant inside a desk drawer, my Ticonderoga pencils are my workhorse for doing crossword puzzles. They’re foolproof. As the erasers are prone to smudge, I always have my trusty, Paper Mate “Pink Pearl’ on standby.
In my capacity of a writer, I’m constantly changing the landscape of my work in progress. Therefore, drafting in Word is a godsend to me. In retrospect, Ernest Hemingway primarily used a pencil to compose his initial drafts.
At this “point” in time, I’m closing in on Chapter 8 of my Contemporary.
*May each of us make a point to stay sharp and focus on what matters.
My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.
