Eva’s Byte #261 - Consumed by Food
This week, anyway.
What consumes you, lately?
As each of us strive to survive and thrive during the COVID-19 pandemic, we adopt a new lifestyle, whether we like it or not.
Not liking to leave the sanctuary of my home to forage at the local supermarket, as the number of cases in my area surpasses 8000, I did so anyway.
Smoked out of my own home, consumed by food:
Since my last trip there, the latest standard procedure implemented involves one-way travel down the aisles, clearly designated by arrows strategically placed at the end of each intersection. As if that’s not enough, the voice projected from a loud speaker reminds everyone to follow protocol.
A few shoppers blatantly ignore the safety measure, compromising social-distancing, while cross-contaminating.
Civil Disobedience—Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” (1969) comes to mind.
Even if these nonconformists hadn’t given the slightest thought to jeopardizing others, you’d think they’d be concerned for their own well-being. Apparently not.
Once more, back home unless driven out by primordial needs, I’ve battened down the hatches, resuming my online quests to better accommodate a lifestyle imposed by the pandemic.
In that regard, I signed up for a weekly, meal-delivery service:
Good-for-you-food— less sugar, less processed ingredients, more nutrients, and 500 calories or less. Freshly chef-prepared. Ready to consume in minutes after heating in the microwave.
Also consumed with writing in my capacity as an author, this week I’m rounding the bend to completing the draft of chapter 47 in my Contemporary WIP.
*My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far. May whatever consumes you for the time being, enable a healthier lifestyle.

Eva’s Byte #359 – Taking a Hike
At the onset of the pandemic in 2019, with sanctions to stay put, I took up virtual travel. Last summer I sojourned on Mackinac Island in Michigan. My short stay at the Grand Hotel didn’t cost me a dime.
And, nowadays, to deflect the horrors of war for an hour, I’ve taken up virtual hiking. My first venture was a trek in the Grand Canyon along its South Rim on the South Kaibab Trail and across the Colorado River (4 kilometers). An undertaking over the course of two sittings, the two-hour experience of “living on the edge” was both breathtaking and thrilling.
As much as I take pride in exercising and walking on a daily basis, I would not have the stamina to endure hiking an arduous trail beset with the pitfalls of elevation changes.
Whereas, a virtual hike does not require hours of training in preparation. Nor does it require fuel consumption to arrive at one’s destination from near or far.

In my capacity of a writer, I’m blazing a trail through Chapter 9 (721 words thus far) of my Contemporary work in progress. Since the onset of this story, a pushy minor character has elbowed her way in, demanding more of a presence than I’d originally intended.
*May each of us safeguard our physical, emotional, and mental well-being by engaging in pleasurable pastimes.
My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #411 – Inner Peace
On the road again (no Kerouac pun intended), my furthest trek of the week was to the car dealership for my vehicle’s six-month maintenance check. Prepared for the long haul in the waiting area, I brought provisions: bottled water, snacks, book of crossword puzzles, pencils, and a book to read. Other clients scattered about occupied themselves similarly or were preoccupied with laptops.
Since the television hadn’t been turned on, the quietude wafted its own inner peace as I resumed reading Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums, where Jack (Ray Smith) relates his pursuit of Buddhist enlightenment and the building of an inner life.
While most of us may not have the wherewithal or desire to forsake our obligations through the abandonment of mainstream living, we can find inner peace by tuning in and dropping out on our own terms.
A three-hour sojourn at the dealership instilled inner peace through relaxation. Back on the road again, motoring along with a new battery under the hood, among other refinements, I experienced peace of mind.
In the capacity of a writer, I’m in the pursuit of drafting chapter 29 (717 words thus far) of my Contemporary work in progress.
*May each of us prioritize the pursuit of inner peace for our health and well-being.
My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
