Born and raised in the Midwest, Marcia Maxwell discovered a passion for history while working on her Ph.D. dissertation. An edition of a 14th century manuscript in Anglo-Norman French, it became the genesis of her first novel, The Rogue Queen. Then, while visiting her family one summer she learned that her grandfather’s WWI letters had survived. Using paleographic skills honed in editing the medieval manuscript she transcribed and edited the letters only to find that they had been heavily censored. Undaunted, she researched the Great War, the Army Medical Department, and gathered her father’s oral version of his father’s adventures, for Granddad had shared them with no one else. They live, they breathe, they talk, they argue--and I get to record what they do. I can't tell you the number of times I've tried to fall asleep at night only to have my characters insist on having their say first, which is why I always keep a small notebook next to my bed.(less)

It struck me as unusual that a woman would receive time and attention in a history of England written by a man (her son, Edward III) and I thought about writing a scholarly biography of her but since our daughter was breadloaf size at the time there was no way I could travel to England and France to do the necessary research. And so the story slept quietly until the movie "Braveheart" came out. My husband and I were discussing the movie on the way home when I told him that the movie was great, but none of it having to do with Isabelle ever happened. I then gave him a thumbnail sketch of Isabelle's life, which he opined was "interesting." I then started thinking about writing a novel. And now, 15 years later (that's not a typo) Isabelle's story is out for all to read and enjoy.(less)

'Way back in 2001 when I first started writing, the only other person I knew who wrote was a friend from college.  We were both busy raising kids and living life, so we rarely talked about our work, especially since we were limited to regular mail, then email (note, this was a while ago!). Once I started working, I had to move rooms after about 5 years in the building, and the person on the other
