I am a recovering "workaholic"--that's "workaholic", not "alcoholic. Earning my Ph.D. in Mass Communications Research and Social Psychology from Syracuse University's Newhouse School during a time of turmoil and social unrest known to us Boomers as the 60's and 70's I walked the streets of our nation's most impoverished neighborhoods and joined the War on Poverty, but Poverty won. Moving on to the State University of New York and a combined 42 year career I became a recognized management and organizational development consultant, a professor, System Vice Provost and University Vice President. I have been invited to the Whitehouse and sent to the Doghouse. My team and I were awarded more than $600 million dollars from government and foundati ...more

I typically do something physical like go out and ride my bike or eat something or just get out of the house. If I get a "brain fart" I write it down in a notebook if there is one or just try to remember it--always keep a notebook nearby I have one on be nightstand. Interestingly, go to sleep and try not to think of the book or manuscript. I find that about 5:00AM my brain wakes up before I do and the content floods into my awake zone. I get up before I forget and pick up where I left off. I am an early riser and I do my best work in the early AM--it may be different for you. Regards, Rick Steiner(less)

It's even better if what you are writing has some redeemable social value. Writing for most of us is the easy part--it's getting the "stuff" published that is both challenging and frustrating. No everyone sees your writing the way you do. Don't write for a publisher or audience write for yourself--it works better that way. Regards, Rick Steiner(less)

Failure Was My Muse

My name is Dr. Rick and I am the author of Retirement: Different by Design. This book wasn't my "first rodeo" but it became a very personal journey for me. It forced me not only to write, but to face my own mortality--that, indeed, I was getting older and that work, perhaps, is not the only way to stay connected to the world and to others.

You see in my first attempt at retirement I failed--I fail Read more of this blog post »
