Cardinal Sarah on Silence

Ran up on this lovely video where Cardinal Sarah speaks on silence. It’s a nice short watch, and gives you a lot to think about.

A good place to find both Silence and Our Lord is at Adoration.

Off to Atlanta…

Russell and I are off to Atlanta for Dragon Con 2019! We’re heading out to make the drive in just a few moments.

I’ll definitely do a write up on the con, but until then, you can check out the Silver Empire Facebook page to see what is going on with us at Dragon Con 2019. Or if you’ll be in Atlanta too, here is Russell’s panel schedule for the weekend.

See you on the other side!

Meatless Fridays: Cajun Shrimp and Artichoke Soup

We’ve started to avoid meat on Fridays. It’s only required during Lent by the decree of the U.S. Bishops, but we’ve decided to make it a regular weekly sacrifice for our family. If you read my post on the way we usually eat, then you’ll know this has been a bit of a challenge. Meat and veggies are basically what we eat!

I had a stirring helper. My eldest son also shelled and deveined the shrimp for me.

Seafood/fish is the obvious answer to the dilemma, of course, but that had its own issues....

Learn Something New

It’s easy to get caught up in the grind of life…the tidbits of entertainment from Social Media, hours of shows to binge on Netflix, not to mention work, cleaning, cooking, the whole life shebang. It’s also easy as a mom…specifically a stay-at-home mom, though I’m sure working moms have it to some degree too. And the concept can work for anyone.

You’re busy all the time. Everything is always going. Sometimes it is a little overwhelming. And a lot of the work you do…the dishes, washing the lau...

I’m dreaming of Pho…and Dragon Con 2019

It was a fateful day back in 2013…Russell and I met a local Tai Chi instructor at a Vietnamese restaurant. We were prepping to open our dojo, and wanted to get other martial artists in the space to help keep the place in use more than a couple hours a week.

I ordered a small clay pot. Russell asked the instructor what he recommended, and he mentioned Pho. Russell ordered that, and then, not paying attention, proceeded to dump the majority of the garnishes in the soup – including rather a lot...

iZombie Season Two Review

This review was originally posted to urban-fantasy.com

I finished the second season of the undead crime procedural iZombie last night. I binged watched the first season while on vacation at a family member’s house. Everyone else goes to bed way earlier than me so I had the time. Season two has been slower going. Mostly because I rewatched Season One with my husband because I thought he would like it.

Spoilers ahead, turn back if you don’t want to see them!

Season Two opens up with the destru...

The King’s Regret, Silver Empire Author Philip Ligon’s YA steampunk book, has been nominated for a Dragon Award!

Here at Silver Empire we’re very excited for Philip. I’m also really excited because I helped edit The King’s Regret!

iZombie Season One Review

This is a repost of a review I originally posted on urban-fantasy.com

Liv Moore from izombie using a straw to drink from a blue brain.

I’m currently out-of-town visiting family and have found myself with several hours of free time in the evenings. My plans for rewatching Babylon Five were dashed by the inability to get Prime on the tv’s streaming, so I needed something else.

A quick scan through Netflix and I found iZombie. I’d seen some of the ads on television for it, and since it isn’t a show I’ve been watching with my husband or with my family, I fire...

Newquist Family Eating

It occurred to me after my post earlier this week on seasoning salts that before I jump headfirst into foodposting on the blog I should do I quick run down of how we actually eat.

I don’t do this to be holier-than-thou on it, because trust me we eat donuts more than we probably should, but to give the proper framework for our food. I tend to get a lot of questions about how we manage to eat the way we do, what we eat, etc., so I thought I could potentially help other families with suggestion...

Stop Selling to Other Authors

I want to point this out because one would think this is rather fundamental, but it’s not. It really, really isn’t.

Other writers are not your customers.

Let me say it again, louder for everyone in the back: OTHER WRITERS ARE NOT YOUR CUSTOMERS!

Will other writers buy your book? Sure, sometimes they will. Sometimes they’ll pick it up on KU to read it and help you out (I do this a lot).

But I see so many writers completely miss this basic fact. So much of Twitter, for example, is writers foll...
